Are guest posts backlinks still effective?

I want to guest post on a couple of niche relevant blogs however someone on another forum told me that these were pointless and classed as spammy backlinks and google is penalising websites with guest post backlinks?

is this true?

    Backlinks are still important. Without knowing both the niche, as well as the sites you're looking at posting on....it's hard to say exactly how valuable they're going to be.

    Guest posting is without a doubt still effective and probably always will be. Especially if it is for related and high pr blogs. You can also use sites like hubpages, and top article directory sites as well. But starting with guest blogging is your best bet because you can create more authority and often times even more traffic back to your site.

    Geez.

    Guest posting is effective, and it's not only for promoting your website or products. I write guest posts a couple of times a week about various topics (video games, motivation, life advice), and in turn, I receive a backlink to my online magazine website and Twitter account on my author bio.

    Not sure why people classify it as spam or ineffective, though I guess all they've seen and written are spammy and low quality articles.


    Regarding low PR guest posts, I disregard the whole "avoid websites with low pagerank rule" if the website/brand has a lot of followers on social media.

    Even if I don't get enough link juice, I'll get my work exposed to tens of thousands of readers and add more bulk to my ever growing portfolio.
