Which niche website design is better?

I have been trying to find an answer to this eternal question... Is it better to have one website for each niche market or can you achieve the same results with a website that has a main directory page and branches for each niche? For example;

Website A: nicheproduct.com

Or

Website B: nicheproduct.com/subniche

It would certainly be less expensive for Website B, does anyone have an answer?

      But can you get the same SEO results for a niche from a directory type site since most people are just clicking on links anyway?
