Ok, I have a ton of pages, and they are very long tail keywords im going after... but, as I said there are a lot of them.... What is an acceptable # of words I can write on this page?

Obviously, 1,000+ words is best, i get it... but whats better?

10 x 100 word articles that focus on 10 low competition long tail keywords?

or

2 x 500 word articles?

Basically, I am trying to write good unique content on city pages with virtually no competition... what is the least # of words that should get the job done so I can maximize my time/effort?

it will all depend on the content of the article. try to focus only on the important content because a long article is not interesting to read. personally i would prefer 500 words.

WEll... for example... this is one of my pages....

mobile homes for sale in Akin Illinois

I do not have time to type out 500+ words of content. But can 150 words of content, and a few listings, get me ranking for

"mobile homes for sale in akin illinois:
    "akin illinois mobile homes"
    etc.
    etc..

Its all about your content requirement.
Give more priority to content quality. Content should readable and shareable.
But yes minimum content size should be 400-500 words

Article must be informative and to deliver what your visitor is searching for.

I don't think there is a such rule, like 1000+ words is the best or 500 words is the minimum.

But don't reply solemnly on content to rank. Build links.

Quality of the article is a lot more important than its length, I'd think.

I don't care about word counts either, but it seems a bit ludicrous to me to even call 100 words "an article". That could be an introduction to your topic. Heck, your OP is almost exactly 100 words (if you're not too strict about the definition of "word"). Or you could take a lorem ipsum generator to see how short a 100 word piece actually is.

It's sort of impressive if you can get something worthwhile in less than 500 words. I find such a short piece to be fairly unforgiving in the sense that you have no room to discuss the topic, or have any loose writing. It needs to be seriously edited down and condensed. Any derailment will take most of the space, and if you're into train of thought style writing you're not going to get anywhere.

It's very common to see "articles" that are written just to take up space in the kind of IM shyster blogs you stumble upon on WF. Well, I guess the idea is to "rank for long-tail keywords", but unfortunately these people don't take in account just how good Google is in this game.

Longer is Usually Better. I would say 500 - 1500 words is great.

The higher the Google SERP position, the more content the page has.

The more content you have, the more of it gets indexed. The more that gets indexed,
the better it will perform in searches and results.

    hope it helps

As far as I can remember there's a study that found a correlation about this, but it's not a general rule. Relevant and popular ranks.

While "more content, more indexed" is true technically speaking, you might not perform any better. Your new content may just end up competing with your old content, and if it's close enough Google will just filter it out. Or if you're covering a popular topic your piece may not rank at all.

You want your article to be in depth so that it engages the reader. 500 is best. It also depends on what you are writing as well.
