My high-quality website gets OWNED by LQ, duplicate micro sites :)

So I've been working on a website for the past two months, doing every possible thing I can SEO-wise to increase my rankings. NO black hat methods, no spamming, blog directories etc all that stuff.
Basically, my greatest tool is writing articles. I used to write for a living, so I know my way around engaging readers and since I've been practicing SEO for a few years now, I know how to optimize both my website and article for certain phrases, keywords and what not.
I have a total of 18 articles on my main website, along with a dozen more pages. Most articles are 800-1300 words-worth, and not random spamming, but high quality, well-researched, quote-backed, source-confirmed type of articles with images I have rights to use and so on.
My website is connected trough 5 social network channels such as FB, G+, Pinterest, Twitter etc. Each article is shared to those networks among other similar websites.
The articles get shared, and read, commented on, both on the social networks and on my website.
Now, here's where my frustration begins:
There are these micro pages from my competitors, who ALL freaking rank above me. Their content? 300 words on the WHOLE one-page site, all copied content from Wikipedia or something, ugly download buttons, no social media, no comment sections, just a one-page micro site with some copied text and a huge download button.
How and why? Google - what the hell are they doing? Just HOW can they prioritize those kind of "sites" over mine? Not just one, there are like a dozen of those kind of LQ blog pages which take up the whole first page of Google. I'm lucky if I get to be on the 10th spot of the first page.
I have no links. Well, I do have a few (from similar websites like mine, high quality articles, pages, lots of content etc). On the other hand, they've got thousands of completely irrelevant backlinks.
Can someone please tell me why would I spend hundreds of hours making a website and creating content for it, and everything else in there, when you can dash out a one-page shithole for 10 minutes and be ranked #1?
Is this really how much backlinks are more important than content? Let me repeat: thousands of spammy, irrelevant backlinks.
I always thought content is, if not THE key, then at least one of the keys to rankings. Apparently, Google still hasn't figured out how to deal with spam. What a joke.
Anyways, I'm really frustrated guys, so I excuse me if that's bothered you in my post, but you have to understand my feelings here. I never wanted to do black hat, and "trick" people into coming to my sites, but I guess now, I have no other option, right?
