How to move my Website to a New Domain Name

I intend to move my website to a new domain name which will reflect our online store perfectly.

I will use olddomain.com and newdomain.com as an example.

I intend to use 301 redirects from the olddomain.com to newdomain.com. I will make the olddomain.com site inactive besides the 301 redirects within the .htaccess when the newdomain.com goes live.

Could I get any penalties from Google since I will have duplicate content indexed by Google from olddomain.com? Do I need to rewrite all my product descriptions since Google has indexed all my unique content or will the unique product descriptions be indexed by Google using the newdomain.com?

Also, what in the best process to use to inform Google that the domain name has changed?

    I don't see why you'd get penalized. 301 redirects are the best practice, and something that Google themselves instruct you to do. You're basically telling them that your site has moved.

    No content rewrites are required. And in my opinion it's actually better to keep the content the same or similar to the old one at this stage. Of course often site redesigns come with a lot of rewriting, but even then redirects are the way to go.

    If you've made major changes on the site make sure that the new link structure makes sense. Doesn't hurt if it resembles the old one, but this is often something you can't have.

    Links in signature will not help your SEO. Not on this site, and not on any other forum.
