How to handle pagination based 404 errors?

Hi everyone
I've encountered a strange situation. Search console reports several pagination based URLs that are showing up a 404 error. For e.g I get 404s for
/category/sub-category?page=5
/category2/sub-category?page=9
1. Should I simpy 301 redirect the above urls to appropriate URL? And perhaps Set ?page=X parameters as pagination parameters in Search Console?
2. Or Should I simple 301 redirect the above urls to corresponding paginated URLs?
like
/category/sub-category?page=5 301 redirected to /Category/new-subcategory?page=5
I'll be really grateful, if you could help me out on this.
