I'm confused with the same. I have seen many competitors having tons of directory backlinks and even competitors with Less backlinks ranking in the serps. What to adopt and what to not ?

    Quality > Quantity my friend.

This is the reason competitors with less backlinks rank in the serps.

Directories are not "bad" but don't expect them to do much for increasing your rankings. They are a small part of your overall link profile which should be a mixture of forum links, directory links, guest posts, editorially placed links in other people's articles, even a VERY relevant comment link or two. The key is to have a diverse link profile with many different types of links and not one that has a TON of the same type of link.

As Corey Taylor said, a few high quality, editorially placed backlinks on relevant pages of relevant websites can go a LONG way in helping you rank and are far better than scads of easy to get links that you can place yourself.

tons of directories are not only no good but bad for SEO. Google has long had a part of their algo that includes hits against link farms and what they call bad neighborhoods. being on pages that have been spammed to death with porn, viagra and pages with thousands of links are all dead giveaways of unmoderated directories and link farms.

  • I agree with what the others have said if you are trying to rank on a global level. Not sure what you're trying to rank for, but if you're trying to rank locally, getting directory and local citations is very beneficial.

They are more likely to get you an unnatural link penalty than help you.

If directory adds every single link without any quality control, then adding your link to such directory can harm your site. On the other hand adding link to directory, which selects only best quality sites will help your site (cpt. obvious to the rescue). But adding your site only to link directories isn't good idea. It is good to mix type of links leading to your site. There are other effective ways to promote your site.
