Targeting a competitor rather than keywords

So I just had this idea. Keep in mind, I'd say that SEO knowledge is between beginner and intermediate.

I have many competitors in my niche that are ranking for low difficulty keywords, but their link profiles are horrible. I'm talking 100+ spammy directory sites, MAYBE 2 or 3 relevant blogs, and RARELY they might have one authority site linking to them.

Now in my case, I am building a diverse link profile doing all of this:
  • forum posts
  • guest blogging
  • Submitting to authoritatve news sites
  • Web 2.0 (tumblr)
  • Targetting broken links on industry trade group/organization sites
  • Some nofollow links for a natural link profile

Is it a smart idea to pick just one of these competitors, and focus completely on building content around the keywords they are ranking for?

One thing that has me discouraged/ I'm scared of is the fact that my competitors have hundreds of links. I'm worried the sheer volume will outweigh my smaller amount.

Any ideas? Thoughts?

If they have hundreds of links which are low quality then you needn't worry. Google favour white hat SEO tactics rather than those which are using the older style 'black hat' tactics. It is quality over quantity these days so if you work authentically, you'll have nothing to worry about.

Every day is the same, why you think this known spams are good links: .....Now in my case, I am building a diverse link profile doing all of this: -forum posts -guest blogging -Submitting to authoritative news sites -Web 2.0 (tumblr) THIS all is SPAM and hurt your website more than it helps with rankings. Have you seen how long it takes these days for a tumblr link to get indexed in goggle if EVER? If you want rankings copy NOT the SPAM from others, but proven links that work!

Target the keywords that are searched for the most but also easy to rank for. Who cares what they are targeting if they do not get a decent number of searches and aren't easy to rank for?

Your backlink strategy will work but first understand your competition . Search for your desired keywords for which you are trying to get rank and analyze the compositors backlink profile and then sketch out your own backlink building strategy and start link building . You can use magisticseo.com a best link analysis tool for checking competitors backlink profile .
after checking the competitors bacjlink profile you can understand your link building strategy is correct or not . good luck

I would suggest go with the competitor analysis and still if you don't get result. Go for manual searching with keyowrds.

If you want to beat your competitor just do proper Research on it. There is always a way to beat them from my experience. Good Content + Good Research will beat your competition. You can really creative by posting low-grade backlinks to their website - this would reduce their ranking.

    Search your competitors site.

Using spyfu, search their keywords use and also search the site where they get backlinks from.
Use similar keywords and create backlinks from the site they have backlinks from.
