Elevate Your Content Marketing
- SEO |
I'm really interested in content marketing and I think it's the future of the internet and has a lot of untapped potential. I wanted to throw together a few of my ideas and hopefully get some feedback on what you guys think - am I hitting the mark? Do you see the same vision I'm seeing, or am I totally offside when it comes to my views here? Let me know once you read through.
When SEO sort of just started, it was all about tricking the Google algorithms into ranking things that maybe shouldn't be ranking as highly as they are. The implication of that is sort of the opposite of content marketing - how can I make something that provides the most possible value to me, irrespective of what value it offers to others, and get it in front of people so they'll click my offer?
Tricking Google into ranking your webpage is kind of the same thing as tricking a girl into dating you. You can go up to her and tell her all kinds of lies and maybe she'll believe what you have to say, but sooner or later your story will probably unravel and you'll be left as alone as when you started.
I think that what we learn from a content marketing approach is to actually put in the time to build something of value, something substantial that can last a long time and actually provide value. It requires a little bit more patience, probably more research and it's a lot harder to fake - if you create something that's garbage, it's going to be treated as such. Similarly, if you choose to be honest when trying to date a girl, she may not like you, but that experience can give you the feedback that you need to start improving yourself.
There's a tremendous amount of value still to be created on the internet in the form of content marketing. I think that there are many niches where a really comprehensive and well organized website doesn't exist or hasn't quite been marketed yet, and this is where barriers to entry are getting higher for content creators. You now need to go above and beyond to create something that provides exceptional value, and you'll probably need to incorporate info-graphics, video or other types of multimedia to get the reaction you want from your viewers.
That being said, what's the upside? To be honest, not many people really know what it is, but what I would recommend is that you invest time in finding out. There's going to be some delayed gratification associated with it, but if you're diligent and what you're producing has real quality, you'll be well rewarded by the people you're providing value for - your readers - and teh search engine ranks won't be too far behind.
