Is poor content affecting my SEO ranking?

Long form of content is always good for SEO. Word Strength should be above 600 words.Keyword Density should be one time in 250 words. Consider all these things before you writing content.I also did the same and my ranking is improved.

  More to the point of the O.P.'s question, yes, content is very important. Many components of search engine algorithms factor in the quality of content. The latest "Fred" update is thought to have been targeting sits with poor and/or duplicate content and Panda as well as Hummingbird both were content-focused "penalties" built into Google's algorithm. Google also uses manual site reviews to catch what their algorithms miss.
  
  Buying guides, resource articles and blog posts are certainly ways of adding more valuable content to a website when you've done all you can with the content on the home page, category pages and product pages.

yes poor quality content affect SEO ranking because panda eyes always on your top ranking keyword and when panda get your site link with poor quality content that can down your rank or might be penalized.

Always write good content. Nothing less than 400-600 words. If you're writing for your blog, link back to other relevant pages within. And do vise versa with those pages. This will create anchor text which search engines love, also ranking that page and the others pages with specific keywords. Even linking to other websites across the internet with high authority is a great practice too.

If you're using Wordpress, then I recommend using Yoast SEO. This plugin has features within pointing out your flaws. Also, I recommend using Grammary. It's a software or browser extension that points out spelling mistakes and especially your grammar. As this is another important point to consider.

UPDATE: I'm personally speaking about blogs or article writing. Not how a business website or anything like that which doesn't need much content to rank high.

Content should be unique and informative and Yes ..

Content should be used according to the requirement.. if it needs more length to understand you can do it but providing unnecessary information and over keyword stuffing will definitely effect your SEO process.

I second this and wonder aloud why do so many people feel compelled to post when they do not know what they're talking about?

SEO is not complicated but complicated enough to include images under the header Content, for instance.

Poor content never affects seo. it's not about poor content.

There is no such thing as good, bad, or ugly content.

You think everyone loves wikileaks? Thinks their content is great?

Content is in the eye of the beholder.

I don't get icanhazcheezeburger....but zillions of internet users love it.

I despise wikipedia crapola...and yet, they rock the internet world. Their content is copied, duplicated, marginalized, lousy, you name it. But hey, people love it!

I think people mistake content, with breaking the webmaster rules that google comes up with.

They don't penalize for lousy content. How could they? They would block have the internet.

They don't up a site with great content either. How could they? Google is a machine that doesn't know good content from a hole in the wall.

Poor content is not good for SEO. The main reason is that if search engines already have the same content in their index, there is absolutely no reason to index your web page since it has nothing new to offer.

If you need to have some duplicate content on your website because it is useful for your readers or because of the nature of your business, you should "no index and no follow" those pages so that they do not have a negative impact on your SEO.

An organized and well format content help you rank up in Google. Don't think the metrics when writing article. Otherwise it will be unnatural. Yes make sure your Keyword is included in the first para. Just slightly focus on it when writing.

To all of you who're screaming that poor content affects negatively your ranking:

Poor SEO affects negatively your SERP rankings. Because SEO stands for search engine optimization, not advanced fiction writing or advanced copywriting...

Instead of coming here and repeating things you know nothing about, why not Google 50 things and look at the top 3 results, make a note of how many had great content, how many had so-so content, how many had poor content.

Then go to page 3 or 4 and look at the content of the top 3 there. Group them by quality, compare them to the content of the ones at the top of page 1.

Then draw conclusions based on what Google does not what someone says they heard someone else say that Google was thinking of saying to someone.

Google something, anything, compare the content of whoever is #1 with the content of #10, 11, 37, 47, and any other number not on page 1. I tell you what you'll find: the content of a lot of pages showing on page 2 or 4 or 14 is just as good, if not better, than the content of whoever is #1.

Yes, after google panda update, poor content affect rankings badly. We have to focus only on high quality fresh and unique content, because low quality or duplicate content always hurt the rankings. PDF submission, press release, guest posting, Blogging and social media posting are the best techniques for traffic and ranking improvements.

Poor content is a one of the main reason for ranking down of your website, any duplicate content on your site makes it spammy in Google's view, and that could result in a penalty. So you should not use duplicate content. Even if you are using very high keyword density then it is a flag for poorly written content. If Google detects a high number of keywords in a page, which is called keyword stuffing then there is a chance of getting penalization of your website. So always maintain proper keyword density, it is 2-3%.

Poor content is a one of the main reason for ranking down of your website, any duplicate content on your site makes it spammy in Google's view, and that could result in a penalty. So you should not use duplicate content. Even if you are using very high keyword density then it is a flag for poorly written content. If Google detects a high number of keywords in a page, which is called keyword stuffing then there is a chance of getting penalization of your website. So always maintain proper keyword density, it is 2-3%.

Of course, content tells search engine what your website is about.
Think of the website as a book or a directory. Would you ever buy an empty book? No.
Why would search engine give important to your website without content.

For second question. Yes, start a blog and be consistent with it. Blog traffic can be directed to your main website.
