Google could not care less about using the same template, same CSS files or same JS file names. If they did, nobody would ever be able to sell a WordPress theme. Search engines do not care about the colors of your website, the font type face, the names of your files - none of that.

SEO is about content and links. Period!

Well, Google is using user-friendliness, at least, in mobile as a ranking signal so it might be better for us to reconsider design for SEO purposes.

What about using Pinterest infographics that others are using as well? Can this be used for your SEO of would you simply be better off by creating your own?

Theme shouldn't be matter. There are many sites that are using the same theme.
    Site content is does matter.

It wouldn't affect your Search Engine Rankings, But make sure you distinguish your website design.

Similar design and use of colors can confuse customers.

Same theme does not matter in SEO. Same content always matter.

It doesn't matter but here is what I think: if you both use the same theme, the visitors will get confused and may even think one is a clone of the other (which is probably true). I wonder if that would lead to some negative effects, for example the users may decide to spend less time on your site because they do not trust you?

I'm assuming the theme can be used by others as well (paid/free)... so it doesn't matter. SEO cares about texts (content, keywords, links, posts, etc.).
You guys are on the same niche and traffic may not go to where it should be - due to your similarities - but it might get sorted out if you are more active in your SEO strategies and you have better content.

More than all the aspects like site's theme, color, templates, font style: Content of the site does matter a lot.
