Should I optimize old post or write new post to target a set of keywords?

Hi everyone!

On our blog, we used to have one particular post ranked very high for a set of keywords, the post is two years old, and the ranking dropped. We updated several times in the past months, but the rank doesn't seem to be recovering.

Can anyone help us with the follow questions:

1- to rank or keep ranking a particular keyword, does Google like older, ranked posts to be updated often, or Google just prefer new posts?

2- we tried to optimize our older, ranking blog posts at least once a month, and changing H2 tags, keyword density, deleted outdated information, and added new information. Is this the best way to do it, or there is a better way to do so?

3- is there a source or guideline for updating older posts?

    1 - Neither. Google could care less how old a post is or how often it is updated.

    2 - None of that is necessary. I would certainly remove outdated information for the benefit of your users, but for search engines, there is no need to update old posts.

    3 - There is no need to update older posts.

    The reason your post dropped has nothing to do with updating the content. The more likely reason is either your competitors have gotten better links than you or you lost a few links pointing at the page.

      Or, the links that were helping your site rank are no longer working (algorithm tweaks cause this to happen from time to time with sketchy backlinks).

      Get more high quality links. That's the best and fastest way to rise in the search engines, whether it is for an old post (re-written or not) or a brand new post.
