Why did Google do this to my site?

I have a blog that ranks pretty well on Google. It used to be at about the middle of page one for a selected key word and on the top of page 2 for another keyword. I was quite happy with that. But when I just checked again a few hours ago, I was very surprised to see that my blog no longer ranks as well as it used to. It's now at the bottom of the first page, so it dropped about three or four places.

I did not do anything that would have resulted in this drop back. Certainly not anything of blackhat nature. All I did was post in a forum (relevant to my blog's topic) and included a link back to my blog both in the body of the post and in the signature as well. But that is all. Hard to beleive that this would result in less favorable ranking.

Any ideas? I want my good rankings back!

Thanks

Zsolt

The initial good rank could have been QDF, where Google gives special attention to fresh content for a short while.

If you're constantly searching and clicking on your own links in Google, it might think you're trying to influence the click through rate and punish you.

It's really hard to say exactly what caused it, it could be one or a combination of many things.

      There are a few possibilities.

First, if you browse Google while logged in with a Google account, google will remember which sites you frequent and rank those higher. This is because Google uses 'bounce rate' to determine relevance, meaning if a user clicks a link and then doesn't immediately return to Google, Google assumes that the person found what they were searching for.

If you are logged in and clicking your own site a lot, Google will show you different results than everyone else.

Secondly, Google has multiple servers and data replicates across the vast number of computers in such a way that depending on which bank of servers you hit, you could get different results.

Third, if you aren't doing active backlink building and backlinks aren't accruing naturally, there is a good chance that eventually another site will knock you out of your position.

Fourth, sometimes your site will drop for no apparent reason for a few days and then come roaring back.

And lastly, remember that Google search alogrithm is like an ocean, not a rock. It's in constant motion as it tries to crunch the massive amounts of data spewed at it every second, and also try to factor in the tweaks that Google programmers are trying to put in. Google's programmers aren't geniuses, despite what everyone will try to tell you. Sometimes they put in tweaks that break just about everything. You have to remember that the only strategy is to try for long term stability and that means backlinks, fresh content and relevance.

      Hi TheCrabb,

I like your "glass is half full" thinking, it's like saying "you didn't lose your job, you just completed it", or "your website traffic didn't drop, you just fulfilled the market demand for it"

    Thanks for your input, guys.

I have checked my ranking after about 3-4 days. No change for the better. On the contrary, it slipped back to the third page for a major keyword. It used to rank on the second page. Aggrrrrr!

I checked the sites that pushed me down in Google. Well, they freaking classified and shopping card sites. Not content sites at all... What's going on? Honestly, my blog is so much more relevant for my keywords than those sites. This is against common sense.

Anyway, sorry for the rant...I was so happy to see my blog ranks so well I just hate watching how it gets worse and worse. Frustrating!

This is just normal behaviour from Google. You might find your pages flying all over the index for various keywords over the next few months before they finally settle. The most important thing you can do now is accept it, deal with it and keep on building good content and getting good backlinks to your pages. Trust me, you will be happier in a few months if you do..

Thanks...I am a bit more relaxed now that I know all of this is normal Google behavior. I guess I got too excited too early. Will keep on woking on my content and backlinks.

Search this forum for the phrase: "Google Dance".

I hate it. It's happening to me, too, right now. For a few blogs that have been on page 1, earning, that are about a month old. I've been steadily building backlinks...and now they are suddenly on page 2 or 3, with junk beating them out.

I'm pretty sure they will come back up. Google bounces stuff around all the time.
