Having duplicate content on a website

I am building a website, and some months ago started putting more effort into ranking it in Google and other search engines. I actually managed to get second place on my primary keyword with several of my articles... but then suddenly they disappeared and reappeared on page 3, 4, or 5 in Google.

When I first started out, I occasionally copied articles from other sites (referencing to them). I have since understood that Google does not like this, but what I am not so sure about is that does the fact that I still have those articles on my site affect the general ranking of my site and original articles as well?

You could keep the url intact and then re-write those articles so they are unique. Try to keep to the original concept of the article, even keep the titles/sub-titles intact.
