Moving content from Domain to Sub-domain

Hi all,
Would you please give me an advice. I have a case with one of my clients. They want to move their content from domain name to a sub-domain. The company has two domains but wants to move into one domain.
Also they have very good SEO at the moment and want to keep it when the content has been transferred to sub-domain.
If I use 301 redirection is it okay and will I keep their ranking position? Also I will update the XML sitemap and will add the sub-domain to Google Webmaster Tools, will Fetch the content. What is your opinion?
