Will Google only rank my AMP version if desktop and AMP versions don't have the same content?

Last hangout session John Mueller said that sites that don't have the same content on both mobile and desktop won't get switched to Mobile First Index:

But did John Mueller meant that AMP version is rank as well?
For example, If I have desktop HP and AMP version of the HP, and they don't have exactly the same content - will it affect my rankings? will Google rank only the AMP version of my site (like John Mueller said)?
*Note: this might happened when webmasters (like me) have a WP theme for desktop and AMP plugin that sometimes might present different content on HP (than the desktop version).
Thanks,
Ofer.
