What Are People Doing for Off-Page SEO In 2019?

It's been a while since I was in the SEO game. The last time I was in the SEO game, I remember the effectiveness of backlinks and off-site SEO in general was lessening.

I've been focusing on conversions, paid traffic, and other types of IM these last few years.

I know this is a vague question, but after doing some of my own research, I've only found some confusing, conflicting, answers.

So, what off-site SEO and backlinks are people still using these days? What's still effective, if anything?

There's still many ways to generate quality backlinks, some strategies I've been focusing on as of late are:

1.) Competitor backlinks - using tools such as Ahrefs and MOZ to analyze your competitors' backlink portfolio to see if you can acquire the same or similar links (many times you can find some authoritative opportunities this way).
2.) Guest posting - identify other relevant websites in your niche to publish a guest article on.
3.) Crafting quality and valuable content on your own website - focusing on publishing high-quality and informative content (how to articles, guides, tutorials etc.)...This type of content is more likely to get shared by other webmasters, which can potentially result in natural links.
4.) Networking in general with other bloggers/webmasters (not necessarily for a link)- the more connections you make, the more you broaden your circle which can later on lead to guest post opportunities/inbound links down the road.

A few others that come to mind depending on the type of website/niche you're in are:

    > Unlinked Brand Mentions
    > Broken Link Building
    > Certain Business Citations

Thank you for your thoughtful reply, Evan.

I guess what I was trying to get at was, what are people actually buying and getting results with in terms of backlinks? Anything?

Is it only high DA links relevant to your site's content?
What about generally "authoritative" links like .gov or .edu? Are those still valuable in 2019?

    Hi Cam,

Evan made some great suggestions for developing quality backlinks.

I've found that backlinks in general seem to be less influential than ever regardless of the source (though you can be sure that high DA and authoritative links still carry some value).

Think about it from the SE perspective: links have always been a proxy -- community trust implies value -- but the crawlers are getting smarter, and the general thinking right now is that content is king and that links & SM shares should be a natural outgrowth of high-value content.

Without regular, fresh, and authoritative content links of any kind are practically worthless.

    Hello...

I am just a beginner and started my career as an seo intern, it's been only few months of my learning and found the importance of off-page optimizations. First and foremost is on-page optimizations without which all the off-page optimizations are worthless. After all the on-page activities are done then concentrate on off-page optimizations like directory submissions, social bookmarking, content recycling as in writing an article and submitting in article sharing sites, converting the article into blog posts, pdfs, infographs and also can do guest blogging in the related sites. While doing all these you can just add a link of your site/blog in the article and promote. This way you can get quality backlinks and also traffic only if your content is worth of a read. Apart from all these, we have other link building methods like "moving man method" "link reclamation" "link roundups" "skyscraper technique" which are doing pretty well these days in attracting more links.

Nothing has really changed about building backlinks since 2012, when Penguin first hit the scene.

They need to be from quality sites, editorially placed and the linking site should be relevant. That's it.

DA does not matter and never has because it is an invented metric that has absolutely nothing to do with the search engines. It's a guess by MOZ about how important a website might be. Here's a great article about how meaningless it really is for your rankings - https://searchengineland.com/seos-be...pitches-313594

Thanks for all the replies. It's good to see link building's still effective in 2019 if it's done right. I'd feared it'd be dead by now.

I used to sell SEO right here on WF back in the day, I was worried the search engines would've killed it by now (to the extent that they can).

Good to hear it's alive and well.

  • The best and the simplest way is to just build a PBN network for yourself. Obviously these sites need to feel legitimate and full of relevant content. There are many other methods mentioned by other members as well, but those can be expensive and a tedious process in the sense that you may or may not get links by reaching out.

Here are the steps for PBN:

    1. Buy an expired domain that has good DA and TF ranking.
    2. Build out contents and embed your money page link with a relevant anchor text. Do not spam the same anchor text again and again.
    3. Cloak the PBN links if you can. There could be somebody that has something against you and report your links to Google making you lose all those links.
    4. Enjoy your boost.

If this is too much hassle for you, then you can just buy PBN links relatively cheap.
Finding out the quality of the PBN links and how long it will last for you is the hardest bit.

You can always ask me if you want help with this.
