[TACTIC] How To Reverse Engineer Popular Guest Posters

Want to build more links to your marketing agency site and improve your authority as an author?

Here's a neat little footprint to find out where the most prolific content marketers are landing their guest posts.

seo intext:"author name" inurl:author

In this footprint, SEO is the keyword. Swap out "Author Name" with your favorite author. And Google is only going to give us results with the word "author" in the URL.

Here's some results I got using this footprint:
  • Danny Sullivan: 4,260 results
  • Barry Schwartz: 8,220 results
  • Larry Kim: 1,250 results
  • Neil Patel: 9,350 results
  • Ann Smarty: 587 results

Is it a good idea to go for the biggest publications first? It might be wise establishing yourself by contributing to smaller niche sites and working your way up to larger sites like SEJ and Entrepreneur. I've found running this search and jumping to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th pages gives a lot of good prospective sites to reach out to.

There is an incredible amount of places that accept guest contributions from authoritative sources. That's primarily what this little tactic targets.

Just a little thinking exercise here, do you think Neil Patel pays to drop content on places like Search Engine Journal? Does Moz charge their contributors? I would be surprised if they did.

Also, on another topic, most local businesses do not charge for guest posts either. They just want relevant, quality content on their blog.

I doubt Search Engine Journal would want anything from Neil. They prefer trying to print content that is true.

That's the dirty little secret about guest posting. Most of it is paid.

That is something of a misconception. The majority of sites you outreach to will not respond with requests for payment. I have found it to be very rare for local niches.

We land these links every week and I just trash the ones that want payment.

There is a case study Ahrefs did on this that is pretty enlightening. https://ahrefs.com/blog/buy-backlinks/

Another tip. Don't put too much weight on DA when it comes to smaller, local websites. If it's relevant, frequently updated by the site owner, and provides valuable content from legitimate authors - it's a good place to start. If we obsess hard over DA we end up with missed opportunities to grow authentic relationships & good links.

Great tip! I also find that researching where your competitor backlinks are on is a great way to build backlinks from those sites too!

So, what is the verdict re guest posting?

Is it that most sites will want payment to guest post, and the ones that don't aren't worth posting on?

Does that include private blogs in a niche?

I had started to contact a couple using the instruction in the OP. Only this morning I read the replies :-(

    Thanks

How lousy do you have to be to pay for something of value.
