A new article on Search Engine Journal reports on how to find links for boosting site ranking on SERPs.

Finding links that boost the SERP ranking of your site is one of the most difficult aspects of SEO. To overcome this, a brand needs to establish the difference in the number of links between competitor pages and its own page; so it can determine how many to include.

Alan Silvestri tweeted a formula for this:

When building up links it is important to consider their quality too.

Link velocity of competitors

Determining the link velocity of competitors is the next step a brand must take after it has established how many links to include on a page or site. Link velocity refers to the number of links competitors are building monthly. Shown in the image below is the Ahrefs report that companies can use to calculate that velocity:

Tips on building links to boost a site's SERP rankings

Some tips on how to build links that boost SERP rankings include:
  • Build links on pages that already rank highly in Google results:
Linking to pages currently at or near the top of search results that are also relevant to the content of the page will increase a site's SERP ranking, as these pages are established and attract high traffic.

  • Use multiple methods of link building:
Using more than one link building method will make links appear more natural to Google. Different methods include link insertion and guest blogging. A great way of finding more ways to build links is to take a look at what competitors are doing by reading through the Ahrefs report, and displaying the best pages by link growth. This is shown in the image below:

That article is dogshit. I stopped reading it after it mentioned link velocity. Link velocity does not matter. At all.

Me too. Hell of a way to confuse ordinary readers.

These articles are like main stream media. Will gain you some knowledge or not, doesn't matter. But surely will throw you in the middle of a pool of nonsense.

      Totally agree.
OK, I agree that SEO is a never ending game but I doubt it's a good idea to build any links just to maintain link velocity.

Lots of bad info in that article.

For instance: avg # of re.dom of comp. pages - #of ref.dom of your page=link gap.

That misses the very important point that not all links were created equal.

Sometimes 1000 backlinks on a site equal 1000 backlinks on another site, sometimes they equal 3 backlinks on another site.

Number of links will not be the basis to rank in SERPs but your site's content paragraph that is exactly answered the users query would be the best way to rank top in organic search.

No. Links are still the #1 ranking factor. Google doesn't know the answer to everything so how would they possibly know what is the "site's content paragraph that is exactly answered the users query"???

Of course they do. What do you think they are basing on SERP right now?
Backlinks? Really? Then how come I found first site with queried answer,
where I can find part for my car on page #3? Well, because algo spit it
to me sites that describing part and not Rock Auto with millions backlinks
which should be in #1 place otherwise or my favorite topic web directories
wouldn't come up on page #5 and above.

I didn't say that rankings are based on which domain has the most backlinks.

The most important thing to do while searching for quality backlinks is to check the backlinks of your competitor's website from which website he is getting backlinks. These tactics give you the idea of the websites through which you get some backlinks. Check the authority of the website which are going to use for the backlinks. This is the best way for you to get quality and the best backlinks for your website.
