Hello,

I work for a local mental health and addiction agency. We are trying to increase our local search presence.

I understand the basic fundamentals of search engine optimization. But I'm trying to build my skills starting with local optimization. I'm hoping to get advice on how to improve our local search standing from some of the skilled folks around here.

Here's what I've done for our local search so far:

-Made sure our website is mobile friendly.
-Created our Google my business profile. I added as many details and pictures as I could.
-Added our organization to local search directories using Bright Local. I believe it was 25 directories or something like that. They were a few directories that were geared toward the medical industry. I made sure to add our organization to those specifically.

I know we need to respond to the Google reviews we have and get more Google reviews. However, being a nonprofit organization, we have to be very careful of privacy laws. My supervisors don't want us to reply to reviews.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  • Having your Google Business Profile is a great start. Having a Google profile and having great reviews are two of the heaviest factors that Google's algorithm uses for ranking. Having links to your page is another great seo practice, so it's really good that you have all those. Optimizing your Google profile with keyword phrases also helps. Also make sure the following things are consistent across all your business directory listings (including Google Business): your address, accurate hours , name, and phone #.

With local SEO, it's good to target specific keyword phrases that are 1) being searched enough in your area to be worth ranking for and 2) have lower competition so that it is reasonable to rank for it. Once you have a couple keyword phrases that you want to rank for, then you can optimize your website content for these phrases using various methods like adding these keywords to header tags, title, meta descriptions, alt tags for images, etc.

Finding good SEO words to rank for can take some research, because you have to know what your competitors are ranking for too. Some keywords with local intent have a "Google local (3) pack", which shows the top 3 companies in a pack that is at the top of a Google search engine result page. Finding keywords to help you land in these local (3) packs can be a good strategy sometimes, but the strategy really depends on the specifics of your site and your competitor's position in the market too.

Thank you for the thorough reply. I appreciate the help.

As you have seen, I have done a handful of the things you recommended. I've also been working on the basics of search engine optimization for keywords in our area.

What other suggestions might I use to beef up our local presence? Thank you in advance.

Replying to reviews does not need to reveal anything.

You get a good review? You respond like this: Thanks for the kind words. We'r happy to help.

You get a bad review? You respond like this: Sorry for your experience.

(If there is something you can do to fix it, then you say add: please contact us at.... so we can work this out.)

Yes, I agree with that approach. It's the approach I would have taken. Maybe I will just start doing that anyway. Sometimes it's better to ask forgiveness than permission.

I'm creating city pages for 4 cities in our area that give us the most clients.

Would it also be and when changes to do a county page? And, is there anything you do differently on a county page when you already have city pages set up?

I suppose you could link back and forth between county and city pages

If you are a local addiction agency then you have a big opportunity to form relationships with other charities to get good backlinks. I'd be looking at drawing up a list of 50 potential partners and contacting them to see if you could write about addiction - no need to mention SEO or backlinks. I'd write about addiction and if you get a backlink, it's a bonus. Getting backlinks like this should be a lot easier than conventional profit making businesses. Citations are a good start but they ultimately won't move the needle as anyone can get them. you also want to make sure that you have perfect on page SEO - all of your content is in a silo, with parent / child pages correctly set up and correct inner linking. Having the right on page SEO will reduce the number of external links that you need.

  • You will need to include specific locations in specific keywords. Create a Google business listing and ask the client to post positive reviews and a high rating on the listing. I hope this technique helps to increase searches.

There are a few things you can do to help increase the effectiveness of your local search campaign:

    1. Make sure your business is listed on all of the major online directories (Google My Business, Yelp, Bing Places, etc.).
    2. Use keyword-rich titles and descriptions on your directory listings.
    3. Claim and/or create Google My Business listings for all of your locations.
    4. Create custom landing pages for each of your locations, with specific geo-targeted keywords and phrases.
    5. Use local modifiers in your paid search ads (e.g., [keyword] + city name).
    6. Optimize your website for local search visibility (hint: include geo-address)

Get lots and lots of citations and make sure the same info appears in every one.

    Exactly the same.
