How long before google will index your links

Hi,
I have been busy building links to my website

Yahoo's site index shows around 500 links to my site but google shows only 200 and its not gone up since the last two weeks.

Yahoo's numbers seem to increase every other day but google does not seem to show the same result.

I am new to link building and was wondering what might be wrong and if someone share their views on how long does it take google to show index the links.

Cheers,
Vishal

I think it depends on how "Hard working" the googlebot is.

IMO, both the number of backlinks in Google and Yahoo are for reference only and, to me, it is not quite important. What more important is how high your website is ranking in G/Y/B after your effort.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Have you done any deep linking? That usually helps because by default GoogleBot doesn't go very deep into sites if it isn't something they don't have much content about. So by making backlinks to your most "deepest" pages you will start the indexing process from the other end.

Also remember to keep your internal linking in good shape. Some people advice against this but I have found it very effective to put random internal link in the footer. This doesn't give you any ranking power because the next time GoogleBot visits that page the link has been replaced with new link but it will introduce unindexed pages to GoogleBot in much faster rate. You might argue that this will hurt your link velocity even it's internal link but I haven't noticed anything worth of noticing with this strategy.

I link to all my pages from almost every page. I have heard many SEO experts advise against this, but my customers have given many compliments on it, and I am #1 in Google for pretty much all the search engine ranking I am looking for. My site is www.BuySoapNuts.com.

The difference between google and yahoo is that, yahoo consider no follow links as backlinks while google doesn't. It might be the reason why there are difference between the number of links.

I guess google is wiser to check which link should be credited as valuable or not :-)

Different search engines, different basis for indexing.

The important thing I guess we should focus on is maintaining the quality of the website itself; the content, the optimization, the links, they all should be in tip top shape.

  • As to what Google officials says - We do not want Google to show all incoming links. This make the website safe and competition is more.

In our experience, Google does not show all the links it has found for our properties. Also, I'm not sure about your specific case, but you may want to take into consideration diminishing returns. We suspect, though we cannot prove, that the more links you get from a specific property, the lesser the contribution each successive link will be. We know that these additional links don't even show up in Google as a backlink, though Google is aware of them, and we know this because of some testing we've done where google crawled a deep inner page of our test site even though it has no links to it other than that of the aforementioned additional backlink.
