First Clicks with Adsense

I have been making decent money online for the last few months. In fact I hired two virtual assistants this month to maintain my business.

My adsense earnings have been terrible though. In fact, between hosting and domain names my adsense sites are all losers. I have built at least six sites for adsense in the last year and a half. Total earnings in that time...a few cents. This changed yesterday.

I built a forum that went live yesterday morning. I had about 2 dozen members by last night. I had one click on my ads. This morning I woke up and more members and two clicks. In fact as I write this members have joined my site.

It took me a minute to figure out what I did different. All of my other sites I built with the intention of having people click on my ads. Visitors must have seen right through me because I have had no clicks.

This forum I built completely different. I built it as a benefit to a specific niche community. Instead of ads all over the place I put one banner ad at the top of the page. It really is inconspicuous, more of an afterthought than anything else.

I figured that by putting one ad out of the way I would probably cover domain and hosting costs. Instead I have realized that making a site that really has value will bring you much more money than a site designed to make money.

Great share. My experience says something similar. I just run one ad on a post in my blog at the top and its working great. Visitor might get scared if they see too many ads on a page.

Can you share what platform hosts the forum, is it a free provider?

I have yet to make anything off of free providers. I have a hosting account with Hostgator. I tried to figure out php but gave up and now I use SMF. It was an easy install through Hostgator using Fantastico.

I am a firm believer of letting your business pay for itself. I knew tons of contractors before the recession, almost all of them started the same way. Go out and buy a $50k truck and put some cheap stickers on the side of it advertising there business. I always wondered why they didn't buy tools or something that will add to their business. Instead they added $50k of debt to their business before starting.

I treat im as a business. I usually pass on the fancy WSO's, but I do think that you need some basic tools. Web hosting is definitely a basic tool needed to start your im career.
