Hi,

Have found a few websites that I think might be of use having a link of sorts on... but how do i know if they're nofollow or not?

Other than checking the source code, is there an easy way to find out?

Thanks for any advice

Tim

I'm going to do an experiment in a few days to prove that no-follow links actually work.
I also have a sneaky suspicion that nofollow links work.

It doesn't make sense for Google to not follow them. If they want to stop spammy sites, etc with links to dodgy web sites then how can they afford to not follow nofollow links?

It would destroy the quality of the index.

Nofollow was invented by Google to preserve the quality of the index.
I would not waste hours on building links with nofollow tags when Google again and again mentions that they do not follow nofollow tags.

It will bring human visitors. But is it worth the ROI?

Going back to OP, I use SEO for Firefox plugin from SeoTools. It highlights all nofollow links in red on a website. The best thing is you can toggle it on/off from the status bar, so it doesn't become an eye strain.

One of the down falls of learning SEO through just a forum is that you get some pretty bad advice mixed in with the good advice.

The no follow is good too crowd has never presented any evidence to support their claims. Its just conspiracy theory and wishful thinking that is pretty way out there. Essentially they are asking you to believe that google pushes the nofollow tag but still follow it in their algorithm and that thousands of SEO experts and programmers waste their time with it because of their anecdotal evidence. Franco needs to just run his test and prove what he is saying but instead people just state what they are going to do and lead people astray.

It takes no time to check if a backlink is follow. Use the plugin suggested and the minute the page loads you can see instantly if it is or isn't. Leaving a pile of nofollow backlinks is a waste of time (at least in regard to Google the dominant search engine) no matter what anyone says. Ask for hard evidence when someone tells you otherwise. Most of the time they will only tell you what worked for them and won't give you the URl, the keywords or show you the backlinks - in other words no evidence.

Yes it can be time consuming finding some backlinks - thats why most people here use some backlink system or package. the people selling those put in the time to find good followed backlinks. If they don't separate follow from no follow they aren't worth being paid so no one has to claim its too time consuming to worry about getting links that matter because as of right now all the evidence along with Google along with the real experts in SEO (not some IM gurus) indicates that nofollow links are worthless in rankling for Google.

and if you disagree do us all a favor.

Put your evidence on the table (not your prsonal storry without URl, keywords and backlink data we can verify) - because when the only people who really know the algorithm tell you they do NOT count nollow the burden of proof is yours. Following conspiracy theories doesn't make any of us money unless conspiracy theories is your niche.

Use the SEO Quake firefox addon/plugin. When activated, it will put a strike-through all no-follow links on the page.

I also second the SEO Quake firefox addon. It doesn't add any time to your work and focusing on dofollow links definitely makes sense and should make a difference. I'm not saying that you shouldn't bother with nofollows, but this plugin just makes life easier.

Nofollow is often ignored.Nofollow links with well chosen anchor text can pass link juice.Blog commenting on nofollow blogs is still an effective way to increase search engine rank for a term.Thoughtful and interesting blog comments will always bring human visitors.

Simply right click the link and see the selection source. There you'll see if it's do follow or not. This works only for anchor text with link. But for URL only, you can always download seo quake, a useful seo tool, for free.

I say just simply ignore whether the backlink is follow or no follow and just build links. It makes your link building look more natural and you get some more organic traffic from people who click the links, not just search engine traffic.

When in doubt, blame yourself. Otherwise, you'll be wasting everybody elses time.

Oh dear, not all this again.

Who cares. I haven't bothered checking follow or no follow and it all works out with minimal effort. The no-follow Boogie Monster won't get you if you have them. Don't buy into one way or system, just do some research and find out how to actually do "it" yourself and see for yourself what works and what doesn't work. "It" meaning your SEO job.

Imagine what a little research will get you. If you are serious about making money then you should be willing to do your own homework. It's not going to take years, don't let the "experts" fool you. People rarely learn without doing, so start now and save yourself some money and headaches.

Bingo!! If you want to make money in it, then learn it! It is the only way that you will know what works.

And if you don't want to take time to learn it, ask yourself this question - am I doing this because I like doing it or because I want to make money? Some people say they can make money doing something they don't like. I have a hard time with that.

If you want a sure getting a backlinks you must consider do follow and no follow links, me as link builder I rather choose do follow because they are really effective for backlinks.

no follow links have actually given some of my sites better rankings weird as that may sound.

There are many ways to see if the link is nf or df. Easiest would be extensions for your browsers. If you have safari, just grab Yoast's css sheet and you will see the nf links highlighted

Well if you are using firefox, NoDofollow addon will help you, otherwise, just right click the link and click the properties, if it says external, it's confirmed DoFollow. If it's nofollow it says nofollow or external nofollow. Hope this will help. Try it out. Thank you

This type of link does not improve the link target search engine ranking.Google, Yahoo, and MSN all include nofollow links in site backlink counts.Google webmaster tools record of backlinks includes nofollow links even though they are absent using the link operator.

Within your domain any page that does not need to be indexed can be linked using rel=nofollow.

"nofollow" has nothing to do with indexing.
That's not what it's for. It is to not pass PR juice on.

For things you don't want indexed, use "noindex"
      or tweak your robots.txt.

There are many plugins for Firefox that check the nofollow status. The most popular is NoDoFollow.
