Sitewide links, clever idea or risky business?

Hey guys

I'm in a very competitive niche (competition of around 32million) and I've been doing some competitor analysis and noticed that most of them are being linked to by sitewide links, which I believe is probably the reason they're ranking so highly. I've always viewed this is kinda shady, as its essentially buying links, which google penalizes.

What do you guys think, is it worth looking into or staying away from? Do you do it?

thanks

Look into it, I do it. All has to do with the age of domain, industry, quality of sitewide, etc... Don't take a site about apples and get a sitewide link on a Dating Forum, stick to targeted sites.

I don't think Google penalizes per se, if they did sites can go around getting Site-wide's for their competitors to ruin them, helping their site in the process.

I have been doing this for awhile on certain blogs that contain the "TOP COMMENTER WIDGET". I tested this on a few different sites that i set up just to test. I have a site called workingwithmichael.com and all i did was comment on 20 different blogs to get my web page posted on a site wide link for my keyword "working with michael" In two weeks i was number 2 out of 336 million competitors. This has shown that the site wide links are beneficial as long as they keywords are relevant to your web page. and you can use that top commenter to get free site wide links

    search inurl:blog +"top commenter" "keyword"
and post a few comments on there blogs to get listed in the top commenter widget.

    Hope this helps abit

That can happen yes but it all depends on the blog i have been a top commenter on about 15 sites for well over 6 months now and still get traffic from them. It depends on how popular the blog is and what settings they have on. I leave my sites up for a year to help people get back links.

Good Luck to you in your business

I don't think there is any problem if you get some sitewide links from Blogs or websites that are related to your niche. You can check if these websites are linking to sites that are really good and are in same niche.

Google identifies Paid Links if they find a website linking to unrelated websites heavily. If this happens Google devalue these links, but even then there is no penalty on websites that are getting links.

i would say it's risky business if the web-site brand new especially, I had my site penalised (but not sandboxed) for 5 months.

I remember buying them from the DP forum

I was wondering the same thing. Nearly every top 3 ranking sites with humongous competition are buying "sponsored" site wide links.

I am thinking of doing it myself and only thing stopping me is fright of being penalized by google. I found an amazing site that big(BIG) name companies are using that has over 6000 PR5 pages and you can get a site wide link for only $125 per month!!!! that is an amazing steal!

I have heard that you must be willing to stick to paying for the links a min. of 4-5 months to see the true effects on your search engine ranking.

If you stop paying and loose all the links it will look bad on you in googles eyes.

Don't even attempt to do this for a brand new site with only a small handful of backlinks.

If you can try not to have every page include the same anchor text. mix it up with 3-4 long tailed keywords (if they allow it)

I would really love to here other peoples personal experiences with site wide links!

It depends how you do it, which sites you get them on, and how you vary this concept. I was on page 4 just over a week ago for a main phrase for one of my sites. Today I am number 2 on page 1.

Do they work, YES. Do you need to be careful when implementing this, YES.
