Pagerank and outbound links - theory

OK, lets say I get a good amount of links to a free hosted Wordpress blog of mine and as a result, it gets to a PR2/3.... Then I solely put one outbound link on the blog to my 'money site'

Isn't this nearly as effective as getting the links direct to my 'money site' in the first place? With the exception that the PR effect is cut in 1/2 because it has filtered through one site... Is this theory correct?

For those of you wondering why I dont link straight to my money site, it is for 'safety' reasons.

Comments appreciated.

    Yes and no...

Google wants to see natural looking links your website and naturally any website would have more of a gaussian distribution (based on natural statistics) of links.

So yes, having a higher PR2/3 link would really help, if you don't have any PR0/1 links then this won't look natural. A gaussian distribution would be lots of lower PR0, less PR1, even less PR2, and so on so forth.

For example, if you just had a total of 5 links and all were PR6 sites then I would venture to say that Google might believe that you paid for those links.

So in the end, do it naturally. What you propose is a good strategy as long as it isn't your only strategy. Make sure to get PR0/1's too.

    Cheers,

    -Tom

      Hi adam,

Your thinking is generally correct, however it may be slightly less effective than you are thinking. Your outbound links divide your link juice, plus there is a decay factor.

The total link juice from the intermediate page will be divided equally by the number of outbound URLs (including internal links) and a decay factor will diminish the value even more. So, your secondary links are probably less than 1/3 as valuable as direct links.

Using those intermediate pages are an effective way to channel link juice earned from link bait that attracts natural backlinks. Since you cannot count on organic backlinks to have targeted anchortext, you have an oppportunnity to channel that link juice through highly focused keyword anchortext which can be effective at improving your target page's relevancy score and SERP position.

How does google know you paid for a link?
You people give google way to much brain power.
And why would they care? They love paid links, or
else they would not have adwords. That is, if
they really thought paid links were bad.

I sell links on my sites. Everybody does.

And natural? Come on. That's even more crazy.
I'm going to make my links seem "natural" because
google knows that I can fool them into thinking
a link is "natural." And they hate un-natural links.
        Right..........

"Safety reasons" ? Now we are getting into the
ridiculous. What the heck do you have to worry
about linking directly???? Safety for what? is there
something dangerous about your site to google?

If you have a high PR site and one link to another site,
that's GREAT for that other site.

Thanks for this Dburk, even considering a 1/3 less valuable, for the approach I have in mind, it is definitely better this way.

        Thanks,

          Hi Adam,

I actually meant to say "less than 1/3" not "1/3 less". The actual benefit could be infinitesimal, depending on the number of outbound links and relative relevancy. It all depends on how you manage the specific details.

Page rank has a great part in Google earning and as well as outbound links. Actually page rank tells that what a website is famous and also helpful. So page rank is helpful for online earning.

    Heres my 2 cents worth

Page Rank is not important !

There I said it. Why ?

If you are focusing on a Keyword then here is what is important

Is the Keyword in your Title ?
Is the Keyword in your Domain ?
How many anchor text backlinks do you have for that keyword ?
Does the content show this keyword and are the other words on the page in any way relevant to the main keyword ?

All this talk about protecting your site with Web 2.0 properties just gives the gurus another ebook to sell.

Here is what I believe google do

Some bod in an office manually reviews sites which with all the sites out there how many can that be per day compared to how many there is on the web

He finds your site and checks it.... all is ok because its a money site
Next he follows your backlinks and finds site(s) which are build purely for backlink generation
This site has PR 5 for example. Ok so he says kill the PR on this site

Yes your site has lost some PR going to it but he does not physically kill your site
His job is to find and kill link farm sites which if that is all that you are using then you will take a huge hit on your PR if they kill all the sites pointing to you

So what I believe is that you show focus on building inanchor links to the pages of your site and make sure the main keyword you are going after is in th domain name and the domain title of the home page.

    Hope this helps
    David

Page rank is important, because many people don't know domain PR helps all pages to gain a lot of ranking power (the link juice as well!).

That's why Ezinearticles and many High PR sites will rank your content a lot faster than a new site! Test it yourself.

I understand your point that a high PR on the main domain is better.
My point is that if you get the basics right then you do not need page rank to get on Page 1 of Google.
I have several sites on Page 1 of Google which have PR 0
I have not done any major link building, I have never submitted articles etc.
If you try this for Weight Loss then sure it will never work but if you go after
achievable keywords then it is very easy to get on page 1 of google without any page rank.
