backlinking questions: how many

I see people offering thousands of backlinks packages... Honestly I'm really leery of having a sudden crushing wave of links show up. Whats the current state of the art here? How many is enough? And how many is too many?

But the real question is: In your real experience, how many does it take to push a page up the rankings? Say you have a keyword like "san diego wedding photography"... i know this one has had mega SEO done w/ article marketing and other techniques. But the PR of the pages is only running at 3 or 4. I would expect it would take thousands of links to rank on this one. Yet, I have a PR 4 site that I did very little back linking on.

For your example "san diego wedding photography", the top 10 results have PR around 2-3 for most, and between 100 and 3000 backlinks.

So if you want to get in the top 10 results it doesn't seem to be that hard:

    - Build a website about "wedding photography" or about "san diego wedding"
    - Find a host in San Diego
    - Build a well-optimized page with title "san diego wedding photography"
    - Use the same keyword a few times on the page
    - Get a few hundred links, a couple thousands if you want to make it in the top 3
    - Make sure the links are a good mix of links from blogs, social media, wikis, articles, social bookmarking, ...
    - Make sure you get links on every page of you site, not only on the homepage
    - Spread the link-building over time

Its all about the quality of backlinks. 100 backlinks from high PR websites are better than thousands of backlinks from crappy websites.

Just focus on getting those backlinks from very high quality sites.

You can still get them from the less popular directories for example, but once you have a few easy ones, look at submitting articles to good ezine sites with high PR.

The back link from these sites will add great value to your PR and ranking.

As many as you need to get the No.1 position.

Then, as many as you can get to maintain the No.1 position.

Also, PR has little (negligible) to do with ranking. It's not something to be concerned of.

You don't have to worry about building too many backlinks. Unless you have certain softwares, it is extremely hard (if not impossible) to build too many backlinks to a website.

This is little misleading. If a site has a high PR because it has built quality relevant back links it will be hard to beat.

PR doesn't equal rankings but it should not be dismissed.

HERE IS A SERVICE I FOUND SOMEWHERE ON THE NET and I have a question to avoid getting penalized using it.

Mass Article Submission To 2000 Sites

Here is what I offer you with this service:
        - 1 article with 3 anchortexted links submitted to 2000 sites (or 500 sites)
        - links are in the body of the article and not just in a resource box
        - sites are hosted on several servers with various C-class IP addresses
        - sites range from PR0 to PR5!
        - private network so your links won't be deleted by angry site admins

Perfect for Web 2.0 properties like HubPages.com or EzineArticles.com etc.

Just imagine the power of Web 2.0 sites + 6000 backlinks combined
Web2.0 + 6000 backlinks = Google Domination! Of course you can also link to your own sites, but if you don't have an established site than you should just go with the 500 sites (1500 links). This is an upgrade from the
        linkracer network.

The article gets submitted to the sites over the period of one month so there are not 6000 backlinks from one day to another. So I will write the article with your keywords and anchor text links and submit it to the
private network to get you fast and stable rankings in the search engines....

======== I have a question about the above service =======

I am thinking about using the money I sent to this service for goarticles dot com articles only instead of my web sites.

QUESTION: Does google treat go article dot com pages differently than
web sites. Specifically, if I have this service submit 6,000 links for a
brand new web site I very possibly could be penalized. But if I have
this service submit 6,000 links for a brand new go article on the go
articles dot com web site would google likely not penalize that page?
Please give me as much feedback as possible concerning what I should or
should not do based upon your knowledge and experience. Thanks for your
        help.

With backlinks it is all about the quality. With a handful of quality relevant links you can outrank someone who has thousands of 'spammy' unrelated backlinks. Remeber google doesn't penalise you for bad backlinks, but that does not mean to say that they will reward you for it either. go for quality over quantity.

It's not about how many backlinks you get at once, even to a 100% fresh domain. Plenty of 100% fresh sites with hundreds of backlinks built from day 1 - and no problems.

It's a lot more about CONSISTENCY of link building, rather then "too many backlinks at once is a problem."

Surely if you build hundreds for a few weeks and then quite, this is a problem, because Google will see that for some reason your site is like a one-day-star.

But if you don't give up on the consistency of your links' growth, then you will see no problems about it.

I rather have 1000 quality links than 10,000 non related links to my website, but either way they will help some way.

I wouldn't worry too much about "a sudden crushing wave of links show up." As long as you don't have 1000's of links showing up in one day you should be okay.

How many is enough? - This may sound too generic but as many as it takes to reach #1. And then when you reach #1, keep goin'! No #1 ranking is safe. Keep backlinking until the cows come home. There can never be too many backlinks for one site.

I completely agree with all of you, quality is more important then quantity.
