Are reciprocal links counted as backlinks? Let say my site has PR of 3 and I link to a site with PR 6 and that site also links to me. I am wondering if that link improves my PR?

Yes it will, but obviously nowhere near as much as a 1 way link. Be careful not to overdo the reciprocal links as well.

Yes, reciprocal links still help. Just not as much as they used to. And like Steve said, don't overdo it.

Sorry to say but i do not back your review over link exchange.

I do not have the exact link from Matt Cutt's blog, but i have read on his blog that link exchange is not working anymore and will not help in website ranking in any sense.

So please avoid thinking of these outdated strategies.

Here is a quote from Matt Cutts regarding reciprocal linking. He says nothing about reciprocal links not working. However, Google does advise against excessive reciprocal linking.

"Reciprocal links by themselves aren't automatically bad, but we've communicated before that there is such a thing as excessive reciprocal linking." -- Matt Cutts, Software Engineer (Google)

And what if I put link to that site from one of my internal pages and that site links to my homepage. Is that like counted as 1 way link for my homepage?

No, it is still a reciprocal link although the PageRank obviously will flow to different pages. In effect you are just shifting PR around, the fact that it is reciprocal is pretty irrelevant to be honest.

I would have to say the reciprocal links are pretty much worthless. It is still a back link but a one way link Google takes much value over having one ways vs reciprocals. I would almost go as far as saying they are 10 times more effective.

I beg to differ. A relevant reciprocal link is not worthless. It's a link like any other link. The fact that it is reciprocated has little bearing on it's effectiveness and usefulness.

To date, I have not read anything from Google that states they will penalize a reciprocated link and favor a one-way link. If you have information that clarifies this, I would certainly appreciate it if you would make it available.

Ok. Now consider this case. I have two domains let say A and B. A has PR of 0 and B has PR 3. I have a link exchange page in site B (which has more visitors) where people go and put their links provided that they have put my link (to site B) in their sites. In order to avoid reciprocal link, in the exchange link page of site B I have put site A as iframe. Therefore, their links are actually inserted in site A, but they are shown in site B as iframe page. Now are those links are counted as 1 way link? note that my sites are hosted on two different IPs.

Bad idea.. Both pages would be seen as duplicate plus it you are attempting to manipulate Google. Dont waste your energy, they have seen everything.

on the subject of reciprocal links i have a small question but didn't want to start a new thread.

what about embeding media from a site that links to you?? would this make the backlink from their site reciprocal?

    for example :

i upload a document to docstoc, scribd, slideshare, etc...
i upload a vide to blip, dailymotin, etc..
    i upload a podcast...
    you get the idea

lets say i do it many times with profiles and many different docs, vids, etc... to different pages on my site

then later I want to embed an audio, document, video, etc.. from one of those sites on my site. Once I do so, will that theoretically drop the value of all backlinks coming from that site (because now it is just a reciprocal link)?

or is this not even an issue?

somthing i've always wondered in the back of my head

Yes it will be counted as backlinks. But it won't works as great as one way link. And only when you link to high PR sites can it deliver you more link juice.

Moreover, be careful not to overuse this method.

Reciprocated links are backlinks like any other incoming link. If you have a well designed resource (links) page that benefits your visitors, the cumulative links pointing into this resource page will improve the popularity of the page as well as your overall site. Your reciprocal links on other sites may also yield click-through traffic in addition to general popularity. Popularity is also one of the factors that influence PageRank.

Yes it will be counted as backlink. It can also improve your ranking as well as his.
