What does it mean to build links naturally? That's what google wants, that's how we try to make it look. But What does that actually mean and how do we do it?

If you see a link to a site does the link make sense?

For example, if a page about buying shares does it make sense that there is a link to a page on another site that sells cakes? Why would a site about buying shares link to a page about cakes?

I know that's a daft example but you get the idea.

Now, if a page that sells diving holidays links to a page that sells wetsuits you can see how that makes sense.

    It's mostly common sense.

      Who makes this stuff up?

      Naturally? What is naturally?

I'll build a bunch of unnatural links to
my competitors. That'll show 'em. But what
      does that mean?

I would concentrate on high PR manually created
backlinks. And get as many as you can, as fast as
      you can.

Naturally, that's what you should be doing!

I guess I can't say too much. I use the term "organic"
traffic a lot. Perhaps "natural" backlinks will generate
"organic" traffic. But sometimes you need a little fertilizer
to give it some extra oomph.

If you put the link there, it's probably not natural. If somebody else links to you, that is natural.

And what RedEvo Said, if you add a link in a comment to your dog grooming site on a blog post about dog grooming, it's self-imposed natural looking self promotion. Me putting a link to my get rich faster than then I can write this post blog on a dog grooming site, very unnatural.

How does google know who placed a link?

Google's good, but not that good.

If we are dealing with people who think google
knows who placed a link, and actually cares, then
we are treading into Stephen Hawking territory.

        Hi Paul,

I think you have shifted from the "hypothetically, what is a natural link" question to the "does google know if the link is natural or does it care.".

I agree with Jason as to his definition of what a natural link is, but I am also certainly in agreement with your position that Google wouldn't know the difference and in any event doesn't care.

"We all know" is fooling no one. We know you are talking about personal experience.

But that wasn't the question. He asked What does it mean to build links naturally?

Do I build links naturally? Hell no. I'm spamming the planet with my internet goodness. But that isn't what he was asking.

You guys are why the warriorforum rocks.

I assume there is some agreement that link building naturally
      is an abstract topic.

I thought natural meant natural looking, but maybe we
all have different meanings and the true meaning is out
      there. Somewhere.

Maybe by "natural" links we actually mean "organic" links.

Now I'm more confused than before.

My final take is that "natural" links are spread out among many sites,
use a variety of real keywords that make sense in the right order, and
point these links to more than just your homepage.

But now you tell me these are links that others have placed. Then I assume
that one way it can be done is by adding some sort of "link to me" method, ie. digg.

Aren't natural and organic really two words for the same meaning.

What google wants is for others to link to us naturally or organically, or when appropriate we can add our links to places when it's appropriate.

But, what google wants and what really works are two different things.

Last time I checked, I don't have a lot of high PR sites naturally or organically linking to my sites.

I do get my fair share of porn hotlinkers but that doesn't seem to do much for my rankings

Natural links are imaginary friends created by losers who can't do things fast enough.

Even G can't do it naturally

I mentioned in another post talking about a sudden release of shocking exclusive news on a site that no one know. Then all the sudden, 1,000s or perhaps 10s of 1,000s news site (big and small players) link to the site almost overnight (or perhaps within 2 to 3 days).

Would G's computer go nuts evaluating on how to classify this as natural (whitie--hat) or unnatural (bla*kie--hat)?

Then someone respond with a cocky answer that isn't a real answer, but to show off that he knows a lot... oh well, I rest my case.

Here's what I believe. You can quote me --
