Building Your Links... Do You NEED Different IP's?

I hear a lot about using different IP addresses to create links to avoid leaving a footprint and I'm unsure how to do this. However, before I invest time into figuring that out, I want to know if anyone has had success ranking a site just building links from their own computer. I feel like this "must use a different c-class IP" stuff is one of the aspects of IM that has a lot of misconceptions (or at least, disagreements) around is, like the duplicate content penalty debate and such.

Any input you can offer is much appreciated!

    Yea, there's no need to waste your time with switching IP's. I have plenty of niche sites that are ranked top 3 and I have used the same piece of crap laptop for the past 2 years haha. You might be able to get more of an impact from google by rotating IPs with each backlink, but honestly in the end, you probably spent more time switching IP's when you could of had 50 more links out there.

    Actually, people don't explain this very well.

    It doesn't matter what your IP was on the machine where you run the browser.

    It matters what the IP is on the server where you leave the backlink.

    Otherwise, any idiot could make fifty thousand websites on his dedicated server and link them all over one another and dominate the hell out of the search engines.

    Oh, that makes a lot more sense lol. Then just building links as usual takes care of this. Also, does making a new username for every web 2.0 or backlink profile do anything for google? What I mean is, if I set up one link building profile is it a big deal in Google's eyes (will they notice) that say "bobshoe1487" is somewhere on the pages i have links from?

      A large part of the "correct" discussion on this topic, isn't permitted to be had here at the forum, but CD pretty much nailed it.

      With SEO there are reasons to have different IP addresses if you are pushing the envelope a bit, but not necessarily for just link dropping, which is what it sounds like you are talking about in your OP.

        What if you were setting up accounts on 2.0 sites and promoting more than one website? if you have links to all of your different sites from that one account isn't that a footprint back to your network?

        Shouldn't each 2.0 account be created using a different IP?

    Apples and Oranges all over the place here...

    IP (in the context of building backlinks) refers to the IP of the site hosting a page that has a backlink pointing to your website. CDarklock and Jeremy are advocating IP diversity, and they are correct in doing so.

      Am I reading some of you people correctly???? We now think we have to
      have different IPs (which makes no sense) when visiting web pages and
      getting links? What is the world coming to? My "IP" would not matter in
      that regard. My ISP? Man, some of you need to do some research on IPs
      and ISPs to find out what they are exactly.

      If this conversation is about having links from the same IP, you can kill
      this myth by looking at you sig. Then looking at the number of posts.
      Then doing the math. Some of you have thousands of backlinks from here.
      Watch out! Delete the sig quick!

      As stated here and many times, if you are doing things to fool google,
      you are doing bad things. Period. No amount of hiding is going to make
      a difference in the long run. And even if it did, I'd still shy away from them.
      And if you insist on trying to schmooze google with all sorts of
      gimmicks, then you have troubles anyway. Different IPs are not going to
      help one iota. And they are not going to hurt one iota for people who
      are on the up and up. What kinds of things are you people doing that you
      have to "diversify" ??? Go ahead. Stick to your voodoo.

      Are you saying it's ok to setup 10 youtube accounts with the same IP? (From the same computer)

      From what I gather people use roboform to create multiple accounts to look like more than one person is posting info about their offer but in a bots perspective they are all the same IP address or same person.

      Did I miss the point here? I think I'm off topic.

    google has no way of knowing what IP you are working from when you're building a website. They may know your IP when you run a search on their site and click into any results, but how on earth they're supposed to know what IP you posted a post on here or built your weebly site or submitted 30 articles to, I have no idea how that is even possible.

    I think what they mean is, it'll be obvious if you host 5,000 websites on a server you own and create a tangle of them together. But if you spread your links all around the web then there should be no issue.

    Wow this c class ip has gone way off topic. What you want is different c class ip's pointing to your site. Squidoo has 1 ip, hubpages has 1 ip. So that 2 different c class ip's. Hope that clears things up.

    The rabbit foot thing helps abit too. Try it out

      Orkut
      droid
      chrome
      gmail
      adsense
      analytics
      adwords
      squidoo
      blogger
      etc.

      do yourselves a favor: go to yahoo and type "googles user data empire" with the quotes. you'll find a very experienced person writing about very serious issues.

      This has nothing to do with ip's of your backlinks but the ip that's connected to you personally.

      For example if you're accessing your gmail with your droid phone G has that info of your actions.

      if you're creating 100 squidoo pages from one computer or 100 blogger sites well your ip is wide open. user data is gold and big G knows it.

      I'm sure some of you know already but CL has a way of spotting spammers when they multiple post from the same IP. Of course spamming is dumb anyways but the user data is being collected. Also if your IP is within the same range as a spammer they wont let you post.

    I have had no problems with building backlinks to tons of different sites from my one IP address.

    I would not worry about it at all.
