In, say, a 500 word page... how many times should the keyword phrase be in the content? Same percentage if you have, say, 1000 words?

Percentage should stay about the same from what I hear, that is how google seems to calculate whether it's genuine or just keyword stuffing.

I think the percentage is something like 3 to 5%

I would recommend that you use as many as you feel is necessary for the text to be expressed properly, and don't worry about keyword density. Google knows that keyword density fluctuates. Just don't over-do it.

I try to firstly ensure that my content makes sense and is of value. Generally though, in a 500 word article I have the main exact phrase in the first paragraph, in the middle and in the last paragraph! Do remember to consider any other links, footers, headers etc that may also contain your keyword which will obviously bump up the keyword density.

    Hope that makes sense!

It seems that something about 5% is pretty good.
But, don't worry too much about keyword density. Just try to not overuse them and try to place some at the first two paragraphs.

This is something I practiced too. I don't follow any keyword density but I agree your keywords should be in these locations. At the same time your content should be readable by the human visitor, so never go overboard with your keywords.

I used to focus a ton on keyword density to help my quality scores...but Google is smart and knows that it fluctuates so don't worry too much, but definitely still incorporate
