The real truth on duplicate content

If I put an article on my site and then submit that exact same article to 5-10 article directories, is this considered duplicate content? I have read it is only considered duplication if it is within your own site that you have duplicated something. (Across the same domain) Any experts here?

    That is not duplicate content. You are safe doing that and advised to do that if you want your site to become an authority in your niche.

    It's one thread title "my site or eza first", that I think is the mother of all duplicate content threads created here. I was hipped on to some knowledge about duplicate content and how it and content syndication are being confused big time.

      I just answered that question in the thread above - but no matter how many times it's answered someone asks it again.

      I don't think of myself as an expert - but after 10 year of sites and articles - I know what duplicate is...and isn't.

      If you are asking about putting your articles on your site and also submitting the same article to directories - don't worry about it.

      Some put articles on EZA first - I prefer to put them on my site first. Personal choice.

      I typed in a keyphrase today and the exact same content from the exact same webpage came up in spots #1, #2, and #3 on Google.

      Don't know if that helps with your question, but it's hard to believe Google is out to strike down duplicate content with those results.

    Duplicate content is so overblown, almost to the point of being nothing but a big fat myth. You are correct in your statement that content duplicated on your own site is a no-no.

    Beyond that I would submit all my articles to the directories without fear. Article spinning is also unnecessary unless it is your goal to create an entirely new and original article.

      I've had sites rank well full of duplicated content from article directories. Still managed to rank on the first page. I don't think Google penalizes sites for duplicate content.

        You are right, but it's not something we have to think about. There are at least two different videos from Google personnel debunking the myth.

    Duplicate content is related to content on your own site, such as having multiple copies of essentially the same content. That can be as simple as having a regular page and a printer friendly page. There is no penalty, usually only one of the pages gets any rank, but in some cases the PR can get divided among the pages in question, which can seem like a penalty.

      I wish the mods would create a filter or something to prevent the words "duplicate" and "content" appearing in any new threads. Seriously this has been answered a gazillion times already on this forum..

      Anyway, just for good measure again, here is what I know about duplicate content.

      1. Similar or duplicate content that resides on the same domain under different URL's can result in one or all of those pages getting deindexed.
      2. Similar or duplicate content spread over different domains is fine on the whole. Eventually though if there are a lot of pages that have similar or duplicate content there is a good chance of having those pages pushed into the supplemental index = never to be found.
      3. By changing the title or adding a new title to an article that is similar or duplicate it is possible to rank that similar or duplicate article for some different keywords (keywords in your title).
      4. Add a new paragraph to the beginning and end of a similar or duplicate article will also have the same benefits as point 3.
      5. Rewriting articles using just synonym replacement does not work as a way of making an article unique in the eyes of the search engines. You need to mix paragraph lengths, sentence lengths and everything up to achieve that.

      These points above are not just a theory of mine but are proven by years of testing.

        Yeah that's a great proposal! They tried with the SEO FAQ posted above
        in this forum. Perhaps the first post sometimes tries here, they are directed
        to that part as a must read, and check a box stating that they have read it.

        But then, this would not be as fun, right?

        What it shows is there is a lot of misinformation out there and downright
        twisted facts. This is mostly due to people wanting to promote a service.
        If the myth was false, the service would be devalued.

        I would just tweak #1. Google says that if you do have duplicate content, don't bother
        to noindex any of it as they used to say in the past. Google will just pick the one they
        think should get precedence. This pertains to some sites that are prone to a little
        duplicate content due to the way the site handles urls. Just don't do it as a way of
        snookering google.

          Here's my 2 cents on duplicate content with proof.

          Would you consider EZINE articles an authority site who knows what to do and what not to do?

          I would say yes since they have one of the strictest article review processes out there.

          Did you know you can "share" ezine articles on other sites? Literally Ezine will give you a code to cut and paste. This code includes a link back to the original site.

          I believe duplicate content is created when the original creator of the content is not given credit when this content is reposted.

          So if you want to blast an article out to a crap load of article sites you're OK as long as you're linking back to your own site, giving your site credit for the content.

          IMO, if Ezine articles gives you the option to post their content on your site, do you believe your article would be penalized?

          I highly doubt they would put themselves into that situation.

            No - that has nothing to do with duplicate content - but with copyright violation.

            When others print your article and bio on their sites - taking it from eza - that is syndication and it's a good thing.

              Regarding PLR -

              By all means, rewrite it by 30-50% if you are going to submit it - and I wouldn't submit PLR to eza even then though other directories are fine.

              If I need to add some fast content on a site and I'm stressed for time - I take a decent PLR article and add a new first and last paragraph and slap it up. Nothing wrong with doing that as you have the rights to the PLR - and the new beginning and ending does better with google.

                What about if I have 2 article blogs and a sales page all on separate domains.

                I then include a blog section behind my sales site and literally copy and past all of the feeder blog articles to the new sales page blog.

                all good?

                  If you use content from another site, yours or someone elses, simply link back to the site. Google looks for this type of thing. They may have some kind of copyscape type script written in their spiders, and I've done some research that says a link to the ORIGINAL article makes this ok.

                  Just like writing a report, give credit to the author and you're ok.

                  Notice you can share your Ezine articles and syndicate them? It's ok to publish this info everywhere because this includes a link to the original ezine article.

What you linked to is syndication. There is a big difference with that and having the same article in two different spots on your site. For example, if you operate a wordpress blog and you don't use the <!--more--> tag then you will have dupe content in your category and tag pages. That is what Paul is talking about. Not a syndicated article.

    To be seen as an authority site you need unique content and lots of it. Unique backlinks and lots of them.

    Simply syndicating existing articles and content won't make you an authority.
