Contacting Sites for Links?

I've been hearing that a good way to get backlinks is to contact other site owners and ask for backlinks. This seems weird to me, just going up and asking, "would you like to link to my site?"

So, I'm wondering how the best way to approach it would be. Any suggestions or tips? How do you approach asking other webmasters for backlinks?

      The only time to ever consider this is when you have an SEO tool that analysis the top ten results for a keyword in google. If the tool tells you exactly what site links to maybe 3 or 4 of the top results then common sense says that a link from this site is powerful.

      but you only do this for a handful of links, your time might be better used with backlink packets, social bookmarking and blog comments.

      If you do ask it must be of mutual benefit, so offer money or maybe content to the site you are asking.

        Don't offer money, if Google finds out they may demote the site unless it is a nofollow link, which would hold no value anyway. Emailing for links takes a lot of time and you don't get many responses usually, so dont spend too much time on it. If you do decide to, say something like,

        Dear (specific website name or person),

        While looking at related sites in our industry, we came across your website and thought we'd extend an invitation to work with us somehow. We are affiliated with (website name and description), and our website is (insert website here).



        Options:

        1) Could we request a link from you? We have a (good resource, article, or other) here (link). It is an excellent resource and would best fit on the front page or under your page (specific page).

        2) Could you review our website in a post on your site or something similar?

        3) We could also submit a guest blog on a topic of your choice, with a link back to our website (don't worry, it will NOT be an advertisement or sales pitch). It would be a quality post with information pertaining to your site.

        Something along those lines, where you offer them something in exchange rather than a reciprocal link or money.

    If the sites have PR and traffic it may very well be worth your time. Especially if you can do a guest post or get your link in some highly relevant content. Not only will it benefit your overall linking strategy you could get lots of targeted traffic from the site as well.

    Overall, it's just one cog in the entire linking machine, but if you can find a place like what I described above, it would definitely be worth it.
