Using 301-redirect to hide links

I recently discovered that more and more people are using a "fake" site
and build links. Then they redirect the "fake" site with a 301-redirect to the real site.
It seems to give pretty good results and also hides where inbound links comes from and that way make it harder for competitors to see them.
Are there any of you tried this? Does it work well? Gives the same effect as direct links directly to the real site?
