I followed an intense debate from a forum that i visited. I would like us to share to share some ideas here.

This is how it started:
-A member posted a thread in the forum asking for SEO advice in increase his page rank.
-Another member said that content is the main thing that boosts page rank.
-The next member responded that content has nothing to do with SEO and went ahead by saying that backlinks boost page rank.
Everybody were giving their own opinions. The argument was so intense that
it resulted to insults! I think we should share ideas in this forum.

So in your opinion, can someone tell me whether backlinks or content account
for page?

ONLY backlinks can increase page rank. But remember, page rank is only one of the 200+ factors that google consider in order to rank a page. So in my opinion you should not worry with page rank. Keep building links at your page rank will increase someday.

Note: Don´t confuse page rank with search rank. These are 2 completely different things. page rank is what is explained above. Search rankings are those listings on the search engines. So you want to increase your search rankings, and here is where backlinks+website optimization(or content) comes along.

    Hope it helps

By saying that only backlinks can increase page rank, you are actually saying the I can build a site, with no content or only a few posts of really bad content and by simply creating thousands of links I will earn Page Rank.

I think that is wrong and that Google is way smarter than that. Backlinks have a great impact on Page Rank but I am sure that there are many more factors to consider including content.

If backlinks was the only factor than everyone would know exactly how many backlinks they need to get PR 1, PR2 and so on... This is not the case.

But you are correct that what you need to do is to keep posting content and building backlinks and the Page Rank will come. Don't wait for it, just keep doing what you do.

According to Matt Cutts only backlinks increase the pagerank. But of course as you said google is smart so maybe matt cutts is not telling the 100% true.

A page can gain pagerank with no content. Even pages blocked with robots.txt can have pagerank.

Main factor is quality of the backlink. It is not too complicated as you are thinking.

1 high pagerank backlink can boost your page's paerank to PR 1, PR2 and so on.... What pagerank your page will get depends on quality of the backlinks and this is the case.

Back links may play in Page rank but you can achieve page rank with No back Links. We built a comprehensive insurance site a couple years ago, and before we did any, and I mean any SEO work on it, the site had a PR of 3 once indexed by Google. So, content matters too.

  • PageRank by definintion is the measure of link popularity. Backlinks increase page rank, content does not. Content can eventually lead to increased PageRank, but only if that content causes other webmasters or visitors to your site to link to your URL.

If you build a static page under your domain and do not link to it anywhere from your site, do not link to it from other sites, and do not tell anyone the page exists then a year from now... two years from now... three years from now that page will not have PageRank. Google has to be able to find a page to know it exists to assign it PageRank. If it has no way of knowing it exists (i.e. links), I don't care how great the content is... it will not ever get PageRank.
