Question For Experienced SEO Experts...

I've been finding some pretty good keywords (in my opinion). This is for a VERY competitive market. One of those keywords for example has 2,400 global searches and 1,600 local. The search engine competition in quotes is 17,400. But the websites and content in the top 10 results are not much "competition"..

I know I need to "spy" on my competitor and find out the amount of back links etc. But is there anything else I'm missing here? What formula do you use as a rule of thumb when it comes to choosing your keywords??

It depends on your purpose of doing keyword research. Is it for PPC, adsense, affiliate, market analysis, etc.

BUT if you're looking for keywords to make money like adsense, I check the SEO Value.

It's basically the maximum potential click on rank #1 in Google x the avg adwords cost per click.

Market samurai have great reporting on this.

Well you definitely check their sites using yahoo site explorer, seomoz but what I found useful is using a tool that sees how many views per month they get by being in the top spot. I forgot what its called i think its seo quake
there are a number of tools but checking backlinks doesnt really show all their links anyway

I like a program called WebCompAnalyst (a Jonathan Leger product). It has similar data to Market Samurai but is specific to reviewing the keyword competition and gives you a nice overview for a phrase including information like PageRank, page backlinks, site backlinks, titles, etc. You can also dig into any listing to look at their anchor text, etc.

I rarely look at the number of searches or competing results to assess competition. I look at what sites are currently ranked in the top 10 for the keyword and use the data from WebCompAnalyst to figure out if I could beat those site, with what effort and in what timeframe. Some of that comes from experience, of course. But SEO is a little art and a little science anyway.
