Hi Warriors,

As a theoretical question - what are the pros and cons of buying incoming links from one of the many services out there?

From the top of my head:

con: it costs money
pro: it is easy
con: they are not permanent (unless you keep paying)
pro: you increase your rankings
con: your site can be punished by Google?!? Or not??

What can you guys add to the discussion??

Thanks in advance..

People say that purchasing link can impose a ban but I haven't seen any site, under my observance, getting de-ranked or banned due to this. I know many sites who purchase links, just to get benefited in seo, but none of them is out from Google search engine ranking.

In my opinion the most important thing is how you manage the network of your incoming links. You must prepare a moderately balanced basket. Neither all links should be paid, nor all should be free(because they are instant). If you manage with proper care it will certainly benefit you without any ill effect.

I have read similar stuff.. But I can't really see, why a site should be banned for purchasing a link.. Submitting to a paid directory is also a "bought" link..!?! Another issue is how the SE should be able to identify a link that is paid for.. The html code is the same..

I agree though, that you shouldn't get like 100 new links a day, if your site only has a few incoming links.. That will look unnatural to the SE and I guess they could de-rank you because of it...

It all depends on what you get. I bought some from a major company a few years back for my first site when I knew zero about seo and had never heard of this forum. Got some results but do not think it was worth the costs.

On the other hand, I think some of the offers you can find around here are probably worth it.

if you don't think there is such a thing as a penalty for buying links, think about when google were to do a manual review of your site and the types of links you are buying. if you are running a site that sells lets say coca cola products. if google were to run a check on some of your backlinks, and you are pulling in links from sites that have your site as well as 100's of spammy viagra, payday loan, etc. type links on it, they are going to assume it was a paid link and could penalize you for it. now this is all assuming you are buying links other than social bookmarks, blog comments, profile blasts, etc.

in the end, yes there is definitely a penalty when it comes to buying certain links.

Buying links in anyway shape or form will not cause your website to be punished by Google. If it did, you can bet that we'd all be buying links to our competitors sites to get them punished.

The worst thing that will happen with a paid link is that it gets devalued and doesn't help you at all.

And the only way Google would be able to identify a paid link is if it is from a known link broker or on a site which has been previously identified as selling links.

Exactly.. If Google punishes the website the bought links point to, you could just submit a competitor site to some blackhat SEO service and watch them dissapear from Google..

If you're buying from smaller, niche related sites then it's a good practice. I wouldn't bother with the large domain brokers though.

I think if buying links did anything, then why wouldn't all the big fortune 500 type companies with big bank accounts buy them to rank? I don't think there is any value in buying links.

Why do you think that they don't? I find reading most of the seo blogs out there similar to getting a root canal, but it appears that there are in fact some very large (i.e., fortune 500 companies) that do in fact buy links.

i have not purchase links since I can manage to make them on my own. And also link farms could be bad when it comes to google guidelines.
