Getting the most mileage out of your content

I have paid to have some articles written. I want to post them to my new site because I know that Google likes sites that a) have lots of content, and b) get updated frequently.
I also want to submit them to an article distribution network that only accepts original articles which have not been published anywhere else.
If I submit them to this article distribution network (to get links) is it still helpful to post these to my site so that I have more, and fresher content, or is that benefit negated because the article has been published somewhere else already? Maybe I should just write new content for my site?
What do you do with your content to get the most SEO mileage out of it?
