What is a Good Keyword -- How To Find Them

This is aimed at the new folks but some of you old pros might be able to improve upon what I have to say.

First, you should know that a keyword is whatever you type into Google to search. So it is usually a phrase and not a single word.

If you pick a keyword that no one is search for it may be easy to get it on page one of Google but no one will find it.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that the phrase you thought of is a good keyword. I use to do that all the time. Bzzt, wrong move.

If you are writing for SEO then you should check to make sure the keyword you are trying to target actually has searches.

To do that, you need a Google AdWords account and then use their keyword tool here.

I usually look for keywords with at least 2000 searches per month. Don't find enough, try going "short tail." Start removing words from the phrase and you might find something close to what you had in mind that is perfect.

After you do that though you should also go to Google and search for the keyword. Add quotes to it. Check to see how many results are returned. Greater than 70,000? You're going to have a lot of competition to get through.

So,

Try to target keywords that people are searching for.
Try to target keyword where competition is low.

There are things you can do to improve on this. The number of competing sites could be low and still very hard to get on to page one if those sites are dominating the keyword with high quality SEO.

I hope this helps someone, even one person trying to figure out this keyword thing.

    Thanks for the advice

By the way, you can use Google's keyword tool without an Adwords account...

Way too limited. Getting an adwords account is for the moment free and there are many places that you can get free credits for a first time user.

Thanks Mr. Right, I knew you didn't have to buy advertising but when I go to the tool it always logs me into mine.

I had wondered about that. I'm surprised you don't have to have one.

Be aware that it is difficult to predict traffic volume using tools and so you may want to aggregate the results of a number of tools to get a feel for the true volume. Alternatively, run a test Adwords campaign, ensuring your ad remains on page 1 and see the impressions as a guide.

To determine the competition of a keyword, use the free Keyword Competition Tool and seek out those keywords with relatively low competition.

    I hope that helps!

I suggest you to use Google Adwords. It is the best tool for keyword.
Or use WordTracker...I dont use wordtracker but i heard about it.

My post wasn't about AdWords. It was more about writing articles. I'm a blogger so I get my traffic through organic means. It was targeted at the new blogger trying to understand they their post don't get any traffic.

I know far less about AdWords marketing but I would think much of the same kind of things apply. Except with Adwords, do I care if there is a lot of searches since my ad is going to display even when there are a few searches. I don't think I care as much, especially on my budget.

    hi rusty,
sorry to bump to this thread again. is this method going to work if i'm domain hunting?

I'd leave of the .com of course but I would do it if were trying to find a keyword that people are searching for. I have done it.

The key is to not rely on what you think is a good keyword. As IM'ers we have another language.

I will give an example. I was writing an article about how to find good content to write about. I kept thinking content. When I ran a test on how to find good content to write about, I was surprised, hardly any searches.

I kept making my keyword shorter until finally I was left with write about. Way to broad to target but doing that I found "How to Find Topics To Write About" or something close to that.

Since I've studied SEO I know content is king and that's the way I think. But most out there, especially beginners who I was writing too were not searching for the word content, they were searching for topic.

A good keyword for an Affiliate is something that 'sells'.
A good keyword for a webmaster is something that is related to his/her website/blog and that can bring continuous traffic.
A good keyword for PPC publisher is anything that is of high search volume and low competition.

A good keyword is always not the best keyword. But it is always the well research keyword that may or may not be popular, or have good search volume, but if it converts - then there you go, its a 'good keyword'!

What you said is mostly true. But, there is a refinement.

Keywords are not what convert. Your copy coverts, keywords get you your traffic. Put your keywords and nothing else on your page. Nothing will happen.

Good post RustyF as you said there are 2 KEY things about keyword research.

    1. High search volume (atleast more than 2000/month globally)
    2. Low competition ( Less than 60K for that keyword in speech marks " " )

    Thanks..

Thanks Ron! Yeah those are the numbers I see most often.

I don't like to look at just the number though. I use another tool that helps me gauge the strength of the competition. There are several out there that do that but that's getting more advanced.

Sometimes, if you're in a niche that you're a natural expert in. It has stiff competition. So it took me a while but I'm on page one there too now.

Sometimes you just have to go after it regardless of the how stiff the competition and beat them.

I look at the 70,000 number when evaluating a new niche mostly. Even then, my ego is too big for my own good and if I like it, I'll go after it. Stubborn usually pays off too.

This really is a very crude competition assessment method in my opinion.

The only results that really need analysis are those appearing on the first page of the SERPS - after all, that is who you will ultimately be competing against...

You're welcome Laura, yes this is taught in any good beginner course.

I use to see people say it is all about the title or it is all about your keywords and I never quite got it. People are generally too busy to explain more or they are just posting to get their signature displayed.

Trail and error is the key to keywords. It is easy to find keywords. It is harder to find those that are not over saturated.

I managed to find a keyword with 30k global monthly searches with 40k competition when i google it with "keyword". Its my first domain and i'm sure i'm going to make lots of mistakes on it. But i'm prepared and i guess making mistakes are the best way to learn in the IM world...

That's what I call the Holy Grail of keyword research. High search, low competition.

People let the fear of mistakes keep them from every doing anything. You will make mistakes, that will never stop, but plunge in and start making them. You'll make some money too if you stick with it.
