Question about article signature boxes and spam

I was watching a video that said you shouldn't use the same signature text and link anchor text in multiple articles because this could be considered spam? Is this true? I've written about 30 articles which i submit to around 10 directories and i'll often just copy and paste the signature just like i do the rest of the article when submitting to the other directories. Is this a bad idea? Will the sites you are linking to get some sort of penalty for this?
