Hi,

I am a SEO newbie. To optimize my website fully, i have collected the list of relevant keywords, evaluated search volumes using google adwords tool, did competitor analysis and selected relevant keywords for each and every page. I would like to know how to spread the keywords.

Eg :

My main keyword is IT Asset management software. Is it required that it is need to be optimized in all the pages to make all the pages to get indexed for the keyword. There are also other keywords like itam, itil asset management tool, may i use all these keywords in the index page itself or shall i focus only the main keyword in the index page? It is advisable to use all the keywords in the same page or shall i focus a seperate keyword for the single page?? Is it effective in SEO? I am really confused, please help me

Generally, each page on your site should target 1 keyword.
Use your main keyword for your homepage since it will get the most traffic.

I think you should use all these keywords in the index page.It will helps you in gathering more traffic and people will find easily whatever was searching for.But try to make maximum utilization of your main keyword in the homepage.

Ok, if i use all my main keywords in the index page itself, what i think is importance will be lesser to the second keyword. Rather, if i use seperate page for that, it will be given more prominence. Am i correct??

You'll get a lot of opinions on this. I'm not an expert but I've experimented a lot with different sites. Google recommends keeping each page focused on it's own keyword. That said, I've had a lot of success with using one most important keyword throughout an entire site and then having each secondary page focus on it's particular keyword. Because you will still have thousands of words on a site so if you're trying to land the word "silver forks" for example and the bots see it only on one page, that one page "might" get you traffic for "silver forks". But if you have, let's say, a website called "awesomeforks.com" and you use the term "silver forks" throughout, Google will rank your whole site as more relevant to that keyword phrase and now you have as many chances of coming up as you do number of pages in your site. This is the power of niche websites. Of course it's also still relative to incoming links and your anchor tags, how much you update, etc.

Generally the home page's Pagerank reflects the pagerank of the entire website. This does not mean that you should ignore the inner pages and concentrate only on the index page.

The homepage (against contrary belief) is a gateway page to your niche categories with each category or silo containing relevant sub category items.

It is also vital to look at related keywords that Google suggests for your keyword(s). You must accommodate related keywords on relevant pages on your site.

It is not just optimising pages for individual keywords. You must have a good hierarchy with a good theme for the entire website and then sub themes targeting the individual keywords. This will ensure a good flow of pagerank or link juice from the home page down to the inner pages.
