So... what is the TRUTH about duplicate content and Google?

Hello,
I'm still figuring out this IM thing... I've been making a few sales, through spinning and submitting articles, bookmarking etc. I've seen a lot on these forums about "duplicate content" and the "duplicate content penalty myth." I think I more or less get it - I will not be PENALIZED by Google for submitting the same content to several different places. I'm still not clear on one thing though- I'm submitting all of this content for backlinks. Although all of the content may get accepted into article directories, my question is, can the exact same article (not spun) submitted to 4 different directories count as 4 different backlinks or will Google only count 1? Thanks!

    The backlink is coming from 4 different sites, it's four separate backlinks.

    Stan, the only people who know for sure are in a fortress in Mountain Home. Based on what I've seen and the opinions of people I trust, you would get credit for 4 backlinks. How much depends on the pages giving the links.

    That said, if there's a choice, you won't see your article more than once in a given search result.

      In my opinion, it makes no sense to have multiple articles that are just regurgitations of each other. And poorly written (spun?) articles hurt your brand. People will read your articles. Do you want them to take away a bad impression of you and your business? Or a good impression?

      A better way to approach this is to write an exceptional article that will get picked up by publishers. Then instead of getting 4 backlinks from 4 article directories, you'll get many more backlinks from websites publishing your article.

      And your articles published on sites other than the directories are more likely to send you visitors, visitors that are predisposed to like what you're selling because you impressed them enough with that article for them to click on the link in your resource box. This is especially true if the article gets published in an ezine.

      As many warriors have said throughout the forums, write your resource info as if it is a continuation of the article with a strong call to action.

      Ultimately, if you are going to take the time to write and submit articles, maximize their impact on your business by creating something that can do much more than bring in a few backlinks from article directories.

      And, of course, this works even better if you repeat the process again and again.

      If you need help coming up with ideas for multiple, complementary subjects, you should check out Bill Platt's WSO "Create Powerful, Profit-Producing Articles in 20 Minutes or Less". Just the one method that will help you come up with multiple articles is well worth the price. And there's much more to the product than the one method.       Why did you buy it if you are not going to use it? TBS is SUCH an easy tool to work with, why even spend the time or take the risk of a dup cont penalty if you can spend 15 minutes getting your article to 40% unique and passing it through the copyscape test to make sure?

        I bought it because I thought articles required spinning for google to "recognize" them and give me separate backlinks. From the sound of things on this thread, that is not true. Sure, it's only 15 minutes, but why spend 15 minutes doing something that will make no difference? If I write 100 articles, 25 hours would be wasted on doing something that is essentially unnecessary? I guess I'm just trying to figure out what the real benefit of this tool is. As I said, it's amazing for what it does, but is the "what it does" even necessary? Thanks again for the great replies!

    Here is my take on spinning and why to do it.

    Multiple instances of the same article are all going to hit the same google and SEO sweet-spots.

    Do you really need 4 of your articles that are exactly the same competing with each other for the exact same keywords and phrases.

    Yes, there are variables like which sites the articles are submitted too and any additional off-site SEO you've done but aside from that, they are identical, whatever SE love one of them gets, they all get.

    Mix 'em up and spin 'em so you're potentially hitting more keywords and phrases.

    From my experiences, I believe you'd get multiple backlinks. This is just my take on it. As stated before, you never really know what Big G is doing.

    There are many different opinions on that subject but, most people think the "duplicate content penalty" is a myth.

    Yeah...sure, you get credit for the backlinks.

    How much they help you is the debate.

    Not seeing much of a bump with submitting spun articles a much. I can't justify the ROI in time on article marketing any more.

    There's no point in your spinning it for that. (There might be for other reasons, though there isn't for me, but not if you're doing it all for backlinks!).

    Whatever the alleged benefits of spinning might be (and I admit that apparently there are some, to some people), backlinks are not one of them, because an unspun article indexed in Google's supplemental index carries exactly the same backlink as a "spun-to-100%-unique" one on the same site in the main index.

    This point isn't in dispute at all (or - if it is - it'll be the first time it's ever been disputed here): even spinning enthusiasts aren't alleging that the benefit they're getting from spinning has anything to do with backlinks. They may be claiming traffic benefits, and so on (I think). Clearly not backlink benefits! Nobody on any side of the "spinning debate" is suggesting that.

    If you submitted your same content articles to 4 different article submission sites, Google will count it as 4 different backlinks.

    Thanks everyone for your thoughtful replies. This helps a LOT. I'm wondering if anyone can shed a little more light on the benefit of spinning though? After reading this, I'm seriously considering ditching my spinner altogether. Is there any reason I should reconsider? Thanks!

    Google doesnt like duplicate content on your site generally as a rule and that includes meta data(there are cases when duplicate content (not meta) is ok). Your doing the right thing changing the content of the articles. Your doing that right. Good work.
