Duplicate Content Question

Duplicate content is only when you have the same content on the same website more than once. If you have plr articles on your website that can be found on other websites, this is called syndication, not duplicate content.

Google has said recently that they are going to be looking down at websites that only publish content found on other websites. So try and make sure as well as your PLR stuff that you do have a good percentage of your own unique content. This goes without saying anyway.

With fresh, unique content on your site as well, I don't see Google penalizing you, however, you never know! Also, as long as the content doesn't show up more than once on your site, you should be alright!

Sometimes it feels like they change their algorithms by the hour...

Shane! I feel the same way.. the "permaflux."

It's happening more than ever RIGHT NOW (algo shifts). You should be fine with what you're talking about, as long as, like Shane said, most of your content is unique.

Will this last forever?

NO.

Not with Matt Cutts around! Seriously though, Google has been catching massive heat (that's why this huge buzz on the net is happening about sites getting knocked out of the index, torched, etc), so they're taking definitive action against anything that isn't best practices or aligned with their guidelines.

How could you run an honest search engine if you were ever to penalize sites that syndicated content? Syndication and sharing of content is how the whole Internet works. Think about this in it's simplest form. If I submit a press release should other sites that publish that same press release be penalized? No. The media relies on syndication - always has.

Here's what Matt Cutts posted recently about the new Google's algorithm:

"I just wanted to give a quick update on one thing I mentioned in my search engine spam post.

My post mentioned that "we're evaluating multiple changes that should help drive spam levels even lower, including one change that primarily affects sites that copy others' content and sites with low levels of original content." That change was approved at our weekly quality launch meeting last Thursday and launched earlier this week.

This was a pretty targeted launch: slightly over 2% of queries change in some way, but less than half a percent of search results change enough that someone might really notice. The net effect is that searchers are more likely to see the sites that wrote the original content rather than a site that scraped or copied the original site's content.

Thanks to Jeff Atwood and the team at Stack Overflow for providing feedback to Google about this issue. I mentioned the update over on Hacker News too, because folks on that site had been discussing specific queries too."

You're more likely to win the El Gordo Spanish lottery twice in succession than get either "penalized" in any way. And that's knowing that you live in Canada and won't even buy tickets for it.

You can get "penalized" only if Google determines that you have multiple copies of the same textual material within one website in what Google decides is a deliberate attempt to manipulate search-engines. They say. And I believe them.

Don't imagine for a moment that "having text on your site which is also published elsewhere" is going to have any negative impact at all. Article marketers wouldn't be making a living if that were true. And what would happen to all those news websites with all those indentically syndicated stories from Reuters and Associated Press all over their front pages?!

Penalty is for having same page content on same site. Press release sites have all the similar content with other press release sites. and they dont get penalized. its their nature of Press release

Cutts makes it clear they devalue "sites that copy others’ content and sites with low levels of original content" and there is no reason not to believe him on this one. A penalty doesn't equate to getting de-indexed or rankings plummeting though. Looking for duplicate content could be one of hundreds of things they look for. You can rank high with duplicate stuff, but that doesn't mean your rankings could be even a bit higher with all original content.

Except if they start doing this then the New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, and every other major news publication is going to get devalued. So will all the local news guys.

A vast amount of their content is copied from the Associated Press.

I don't see how they can penalize auto blogs and sites like that without hitting sites like these that in no way deserve any kind of punishment.

Well, like I was saying, those sites already have loads of various things going for them that google likes. The New York Times could have an article titled "where to buy blue widgets in new york" and then just have a one sentence article. They might still get ranked high for it because of their authority, but that doesn't mean that google hasn't lowered the value at least a tiny bit of that page compared to if it had a full article.
