Question on updating content

A little backstory:
I have a large directory site with affiliate links but my site has tons of original hand written content to go along with it. My website is over 6 years old. I rank well but lost a couple of great #1 spots after this last Google update. (Dropped to #3 & #5)
Now my question: Does it matter how often I update my index page IF I add new content weekly? When I add new content I have a place on the index that links to the new entries. My index looks sort of 'static' besides the new content I add maybe twice a week. I know some sites update daily, but is that necessary?
