Tricky way to get people to click

I thought this was a bit of a trick.

The article at:

HowStuffWorks "How can the grass on the greens at a golf course be so perfect?"

is about lawns. If you read the text you'll see stuff like:

Then you choose perfect grass. Several of the links below spend a good bit of time discussing different species and types of grass

If you were willing to do all of this, you too could have a golf green in your front yard -- many of the links below will show you just how to do that if you are interested!

What links are directly below the article? Adsense ads. Guess where people will be clicking if they read the article?

Isn't this getting awfully close to breaking the adsense TOS? That's a fine line and I'd rather not get anywhere near it.

I am sure google lets howstufworks.com slide because they generate a ton of cash for them. If you or I tried that they would ban us in a heartbeat.

i personally would not do that.

Yeah, I figured as much. Websites like that, ezinearticles.com, and others can practically say..."Hey You! Click This Ad Now!" and get away with it scott-free

They aren't getting away with anything - they have different agreements with google.

It's the same in any business - those few who sell thousands of your products monthly get better terms than those who sell a few.

actually, it is indeed a trick. many writers and sites owner actually use this technique in attracting readers and people to click on the link. somehow it is effective in creating a traffic in your site. better yet, ensure that you have a really good writer to do the trick for you. that is important.

I would agree with the rest. It's a trick to avoid.

However, if you simply provide highly relevant content on a given niche topic that people really can use and add AdSense to the mix, then your chances of gaining increased Google clicks will be increased.

                  No tricks

                    It's definitely against the TOS.
However, it seems to me that it's because the internal link below just didn't show up rather than a blatant attempt at gaming Google.

Look at an example of another page:
                    http://science.howstuffworks.com/question181.htm

Directly below the articles are actually useful links related to the article.

Anyway, since I don't read the site often, it's just my assumption. I may be wrong.

Your method of Google links is okay. The TOS directly states that as long as you block things off like that reader did you are good to go.

There is a clear distinction between the links and the Google Ads.

It's a trick that violates google's rules about encouraging visitors to click on ads.

The site may have sufficient traffic to have permission from google to do this - but I sure wouldn't try it.

    Hi,

myself i think it would be better to avoid as adsense pick things up straight away & are more then ready to block accounts etc. so its not really worth it.

They defenitely have different terms. Think about it, G sells ads to parked domains, not you as individual small sites, but to wholesalers. You'll be surprised - most of those parked domains have ads only without any contents. But trust me, G serves ads to those guys only, without contents.

          Where exactly is the trick?

The ads are clearly labeled as ads.

I don't try any tricky methods. I prefer to have my users click if they are indeed interested. Nothing is worth risking violating Google's TOS.

I looked at the site and really didn't see anything wrong with it. Granted there wasn't much content on it, but the ads were just strategically placed below the post, however they were clearly marked as google ads. Google does allow you to place them after the content, and they really, to my knowlege, haven't said how much content you need. I've seen pages of nothing but google ads and no content. I am shocked that these pages get by.

It certainly does seem cheeky, but if they can get away with it, im sure they are getting a much better CTR.

Nice trick but it will get you banned. You can not advertise the links as I were. The most you can do is to describe them as sponsored links.
