Duplicate content question

I have a sales page that ranks well in Google. Someone copy/pasted the content and posted it on a 'pirating request' forum.

Now the page is duplicate content. Does this affect my SEO ranking?

Let's turn the question around. What happens if I take the pages above me in search results and duplicate the content on various other websites?

Just curious.

Now the page is duplicate content.
It's not duplicate content. It's now syndicated content. Big difference.

Duplicate content is the same content found multiple times on the same website. Syndicated content is the same content found on multiple websites.

This issue again - Duplicate Content!

I completely disagree. Duplicate content is more or less identical content found on the same or on different websites. Syndicated content is one way by which duplicate content can arise.

The confusion arises because not all duplicate content is penalized by Google. Duplicate content on different sites is not penalized by Google unless in certain specified circumstances. On the other hand, most duplicate content on the same site is penalized by Google but here again there are some exceptions specified where it is not penalized.

Note that "duplicate" is an english word and in the dictionary and has only one meaning which is more or less "mirror". It is not the coinnage of Google and so whenever there is more or less a "mirror" of another content, it is a "duplicate" of that content.

You are the original content. So I'm sure Google will favor you in terms of ranking on that page.

Ahhh.. the old duplicate content question again.. Okay, do this..

      1. Search for the following phrase on Google.. "Ireland tried to draw a line under its financial crisis on Thursday"

      2. Now look at how many different web pages are indexed in Google for the same duplicate content.

This phrase is an excerpt from a news story today and when I last checked there are 192 different web pages indexed by Google that have the same content.

In short, don't worry about it.

So it the same way, it's not worth changing my articles to make the content unique when posting it on various websites?

Remember that your web pages rank for keywords that people search for. Lets say for example that you have an article optimised for the keyword phrase "cable knitting patterns" that is syndicated on 100 other web pages on different domains.

All of those web pages may certainly get indexed in Google but which one will rank the highest for "cable knitting patterns"? There are a number of factors which decide that, namely on and off page SEO for one but it isn't necessarily the originator of the article that ranks highest.

Now compare this to an original article optimised for the same phrase that doesn't have to fight for attention with 100 other web pages like the duplicate example. The original article will be a lot easier to rank highly for because of this.

In summary, duplicate or syndicated articles will get indexed for the same keywords but you have to work a lot harder and smarter to rank highly for these keywords. In comparison, a well optimised original article is a lot easier to rank highly for.

I completely agree and just to add that not all duplicate/syndicated content will get indexed by Google, at least not in the main index.

Don't worry about it. Google is not hard on content that is available on different websites, as one posted termed it as "syndicated" content. If your content is original and well linked then you'll be the top earner.

Make yourself stand out by adding a comment form and entourage people to post comments. On that page the comments may be enough to make you unique and separate yourself from the crowd -- plus if your commenter use misspellings or other word synonyms they will show up on Google for those phrases.
