Who really clicks on AdSense ads?

I want to make money from AdSense and at the moment I'm learning how to do keyword research and SEO so to be able to draw as many visitors to my website as possible.
I get it that the main point is to get traffic and visitors. Tons of them!

But then I thought to myself: "Dude, who the f*** clicks on Google ads?"

I mean, even if I get one thousand people to visit my site every day, I don't think that more than 3 or 4 of those guys will click on the ads!
People hate ads, people avoid ads and people are blind to whatever banners or text ads are there.
Even if you color blend the ads well into your page, people will still ignore them and will not click on them.
And this goes for the text of the ads too - no matter what the ad says, no matter how smart it was designed, people are trained to ignore it.
I really don't know any people who click on ads and I have been on the internet for many years.
I know it depends on the niche and all that but an ad is an ad - in its essence it is trying to shove something down your throat and people would install all kinds of ad blocker plugins in their browsers just to avoid seeing it.

So, who really does click on ads? Are the clicks accidental?

I know this sounds like a complete newbie/moron question but hey, I'm still not convinced that 1000 visitors per day will get you any clicks.

Interesting... I only know people who avoid ads. Don't know any people who click on them.

My blog has 2000+ visits this month. And not a single click on the ads (if we don't count the ones that I myself clicked to test the banners).
2000 unique visitors didn't give a damn about what Google was selling them.

I was helping my mother with a video project yesterday. We needed a plugin for Media Player. So in trying to download the plugin my mom clicks on 2 adsense image ads because they say "download" on them. Funny thing is I was sitting there laughing because the webmaster did a great job.

A very similar thing happened to me.

My dad was having trouble on the family computer setting up a new antivirus program. He was searching for help online and I saw him click on an Adsense ad. I was in shock (even though I didn't say anything).

You have to remember that not everyone who uses a computer or the Internet is Internet savvy.

Well, I think my ad placement is OK... a left sidebar and then small ads between blog posts.

Ad relevance... I don't know what this is.
I think Google chooses the ads for you based on your content?

Haha, makes sense! Only a moron or a woman would click on an ad.
Damn... to the ladies: I didn't mean it.

You have to understand that people surfing the internet are not like
you and me. They are not experts. They don't know much how
to search right or find information. My wife is like that. Just think
of how many people touch a computer for the first time daily.
Your visitors are not going to be computer or internet savvy for
the most part. They don't care or know if they are clicking on an
      ad. It looks good.

Reminds of a time about 10 years ago. I was working with a friend
together on my computer. I got up and he spotted a banner ad
that said, "You have messages! Click here." It took whole
lot of explaining to him just what a banner ad was and how there
really were no messages for me. What drove me crazy is that in
the near future, we were doing the same thing, and darn it if he
didn't see that stupid ad again and want to me to click!!!!

Why do you think people fall for those emails from Nigeria? To you
and me it makes no sense. To a vast population of internet users,
it makes sense to get an email saying you are now rich!

I never click on sponsored ads in search results. Well, okay, about
once a year. But the normal search population does not know the
difference between the top, side, or real search results. They
just want something. And if it looks good, they click.

Thanks, Paul. That's a great post and it helped me understand how things really work in the AdSense world.
I guess the bottom line is that many people just don't understand what ads are and don't mind clicking on them. And this is the part of the population that we want to use for our money-making needs.

Yes, lot of people click on ads. As one example, my friend was looking for children costumes and there was that adsense ad on one of the websites for the costume he wanted so now whenever he needs a costumes he goes back to that particular website as there was many targeted ads for different costumes so he is using this particular website to find costumes through adsense ads, I am pretty sure he does not even realize that these are ads or somebody is paying for it or somebody is getting paid. He even recommended that website for other people as there was such as good selection of links ( adsense)

I myself also click on ads, if I am looking for something and there is an ad for that I will check it out, I don’t avoid it just because it is ad.

Why do so many people make decent money from Adsense? People click ads, it is just that Webmasters hardly do. New internet users worldwide are getting on the internet each day and they have not begun suffering from Ad blindness like the rest of us.

Have you ever watched some of your computer illiterate friends/family search the web to try and find something that they are looking for? It's quite annoying but I just let them search because I don't want to be rude and be like don't click that! lol

If you really observe the way other people search the web you will be surprised on the things they click on.

Two things: One, my Adsense click through rate on my best site right now is 3-4%. I get 3-4 clicks and about $1.50 per hundred visitors. Unfortunately I only get about 120 uniques per day from that site. I would dearly love to see 2000 uniques per day. It is doable, but I will need to get from the middle of page 2 on Google to the middle of page 1 (my biggest competitor does 1.5m visitors per year, so I know if I can beat him the traffic is there).

Two: Google tailors Adsense to viewers. Get the right demographic, and you will get good ads and clicks. Last December I had ads for the Nissan Leaf on my site and my Youtube videos, and those were some high dollar clicks. I have also had Mercedes Benz. My site has nothing to do with cars -- it is a hobby niche popular with men 45-65 years old.

With 2000 unique visitor, you should expect about 30-40 clicks. Work on your placement, uglier site gets better click through rate in my experience with my sites.

Alright, folks, thanks for your replies.
    I am convinced now.
What is a good way to increase your click-through-rate?
Is it all about placement and color-blending the ads? Or is there something else that I am missing?

I've tried blending, and contrast.. can't say I've really noticed it make too much of a difference. I have heard other publishers saying it mattered for them though.

What seems to be the most constant is that my "clear cut" shopping keywords get a higher CTR vs KWs that could be used by some as an informational query.

Also I look at the ads on my site and when a site is showing more relevant ads, the CTR is better. For one of my sites, a few advertisers seem to go in and out of having impressions.. maybe its a budget/seasonal thing? Anyway, the months that they have ads, their titles are almost dead on with my targeted KW and outcome is really noticeable in the CTR.

If you want to get big in the Adsense game, I'd highly recommend you check out Scott Blanchard's tools, namely the Clickbump Engine theme, the layout of which will give you a great CTR.

I had a friend over shopping for prices on something she wanted to buy--and definitely knew she didn't want to buy it online.

She's web savvy, but I dont think she knows or cares that people pay for those ads. Anyways she opened new tabs for the first 5 results, 3 of which were paid ads on top.

I completely agree. Most people can't tell the difference because the developers blend it so well.

If people didn't click, do you think that they would continue to spend the money it takes to do the advertising? Not likely. So the ads must be driving traffic, so obviously people click on them.

I happened to get 1,500+ clicks in one day on a couple of articles. So don't believe for a minute that people don't click on AdSense ads.

Damnit, man, 1,500 clicks in one day?!
What is the secret? Were those articles about commercial products that people were looking to buy? Were all the articles posted on the same blog or on several different blogs?
      Jesus, that's awesome!

If I do recall correctly, TimPears has a successful news-type site that ranks really fresh content very well temporarily..getting mass traffic. And he has to publish daily to maintain that.

    You would be surprised!!

The big benefit of Adsense is that clicking on the ads does cost the site visitor....as opposed to purchasing a product.
There are niches where people click on ads like crazy but clickbank just doesnt do well.
