Forum backlinks - Post or not?

When you create a forum profile to add a link in a signature is it necessary to make posts on the forum also?

I watched a video recently which said you should make about 5 posts then visit the forum a week later to put your link in the signature.

Although other people say you can just leave a link after about 1 week without making any posts. In your experience do admins usually ban people who leave a signature link but have no posts?

Some of my websites are in niches which i don't have any knowledge on so im not even sure what to say in the forum without the posts looking spammy.

You can just leave a link on your profile and then you're done.

Keep track of your urls though and do something with them to get them indexed... they usually won't on their own.

Does having 5 posts on a forum mean you get 5 backlinks from that forum or does it only count as 1 backlink?

Is pinging the profile URL sufficient enough to get them indexed or is it better to create an RSS feed of the URL's then submit to RSS directories?

Each post counted as one back link.

Each new link from the same IP address gets "watered down".

So having 5 links from 1 site is less valuable than 5 links from 5 sites. You're better off moving on to the next site and getting more links.

Pinging helps, linklicous is pretty good for just pinging. Though it doesn't mean that they'll get indexed either.

I use scrapebox to check and see if my links are indexed, or you can just grab the url and put it into a Google search, if it shows up, it's indexed... if not... try again.

The best way to get your backlinks indexed is to backlink each one.
