It is good to see that there is competition for Google. With recent changes many people that I have talked to found the Google results to assuming. Also, the farmer update did not only hit low-quality sites but also some great sources of information. Bing currently does a far better job than Google in terms of syndication with other sites. So, yeah, why wouldn't bing be able to overtake Google ... Remember how big AOL, CompuServe and others were in the beginning?

I think bing has a lot of potential but Google will remain in
peoples minds at least for another two or three decades...

Clearly, Google has obtained everyone's confidence when
searching for stuff and they are controlling most searches.

However, I do know a lot of people who prefer other search
engines like Yahoo over Google for reasons of relevance.

While these projections seem promising, the only way they'll come to pass by January 2012 is if Google keeps losing market share at this same consistent rate while Bing is gaining it. If there's anything we have learned from past events, it is that consistency in business can be rather elusive despite one's best efforts.

Regardless of what happens, Bing seems to have gained significant ground over the past year or so, and has left Yahoo pretty much in the dust. Whether it continues to gain ground in the coming months is going to depend on public perception and response - in my opinion, I find it quite implausible for Google to continue losing market share consistently over any extended period of time, like what is projected in the report.

Actually, that article is misleading - Bing itself didn't suddenly take a huge jump in marketshare...it's the combination of Bing and Yahoo. In that perspective, nothing has changed at all - and the gap in the marketshare is an enormous one.

This reminds me of all the browser and operating system wars I've seen over the years. I remember when FireFox launched and I still hear how it's overtaking IE. Based on my stats, 77% of my visitors are still using IE, compared to just 15% of FF. Google Chrome is grabbed nearly 5% of those visitors away from FF compared to a year ago.

97% of my visitors are still using MS Windows, with 1.1 percent using MAC's. The rest is a smattering of everything.

Say what you want, the numbers don't lie - individually or combined, Bing and Yahoo haven't put a dent in Google's market share.

No. There are numerous news articles online that show how Google manipulated that data to make it look like Bing was copying results, but it wasn't true.

Can Bing overcome Google? Doubtful, but possible. Many of us remember when AltaVista, Lycos and even Yahoo were the biggest and best search engines, but they have all faded or vanished. The same is likely to happen to Google.

Goggle's claim to fame is not really better search. It was generating context-sensitive ads from searches, and that has made them untold billions off the intellectual property of others.

Goggle is not the last search engine. Something better is just around the corner.

No, but Google concocted a phony test to make it look like they did.

Here's what actually happened:

- Users agreed to share data with Microsoft
- Users made very unlikely searches on Google
- Users clicked through on the search results to unrelated sites
- Bing rapidly indexed those unrelated sites for the search term

Now, while Google said this was a clear case of Microsoft stealing Google search results, that wouldn't be necessary to get this behaviour.

See, the user has shared their search and subsequent click with Microsoft. And when you search for a term, then click something in the tab where you searched, whatever you clicked must be a good match for that term. It doesn't matter which search engine you use. It doesn't matter what rank the link you clicked was. It only matters that you searched and clicked.

What the Google researchers did was exploit statistical anomalies in search engine design that are common to ALL search engines, to produce aberrant results when no other data were available.

The "proof" only works on something that Google has indexed and Bing hasn't, and only when the user has explicitly agreed to share their browsing activity with Microsoft.

Not much of a proof, if you ask me.

(And no, Bing isn't going to overtake Google. The very idea is just stupid.)

... Bing overtakes Google in JANUARY 2012?

I'm fairly sure that's one of the signs the world will end in 2012... Better start wrapping things up, get some ticks in the boxes of my bucket list.

On a slightly more serious note, as the article mentions itself, the numbers are fairly contrived and there's absolutely no expectation that the drop in Google's market share and rise in Bing's will continue. So I'm not expecting it, but it's interesting to see that Bing is getting more influential.

I sense an onslaught of Bing-related SEO WSO's in the months to come.

IE actually makes up for about 50% of all browser users. The others account for the other 50% according to an article about Microsoft in this months Fortune magazine.

Stranger things have happened in the past. Let's not forget that Google replaced Yahoo who, at the time, appeared to have become the dominant force in the search field.

Perhaps the biggest difference between then and now is more and more "ordinary" people use the internet and many of them refer to online searching as "googling" in the same way people use "Biro" for ball point pens.

Some of the more "out there" types reckon the world will end in 2012 maybe this is what they mean

I myself use and like Google search engine more than others but until most people think search = Google, Bing and other search engines can't compete it. Bing is live because its owned by a very rich company as Microsoft and if it was other's , i think it was closed now.

once google was nothing and overtook everyone on the internet.

now i think they are a victim of their own success, and with the new changes in particular they are showing us they are willing to sacrifice other peoples content to have their own rank above it in the SERPS. this is a bad move in my opinion and can only hurt them in the long run

I love the skeptical comments here - but it's probably more likely to happen than you realise.

People get bored of things. Google has been around for such a long time now, it could well be the case where people just look for something new. And with Bing heavily advertising, i could be them.

I really, really, REALLY hope not though.

Google hasn't been around very long at all...and their real growth in the market has been in the last 7 years. Yahoo has been around since 1994 (or maybe 95) and they took over the market and then promptly stopped innovating.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, Bing's jump in market share is because they folded Yahoo search into their market share. So Bing isn't in any better position really, because they also took Yahoo out of the mix.

And if you look at it historically, Microsoft's search division has consistently failed to grab a substantial piece of the market. What's different with Bing, besides the new name and look?

Because Google is so in-grained into society as a whole for online search I don't think anyone is going to overtake them in this area for a long time to come.

How many times do you hear people say go and "Google it" or "I Googled it"? Has anyone you've heard say go "Bing it" not quite the same is it

Since microsoft added itself as my home page and I haven't bothered changing it...

I wonder if they're counting all the accidental bing searches that happen because of them automatically making my curser jump to their search box so while I think I'm typing in my roboform search box, I'm actually doing a Bing search.

Or, I wonder if they're counting all the misleading article titles that I click on only to find out that I've just done a bing search when all I was trying to do is read an article.

Sometimes things aren't always as they appear on the surface.

On the flip side, I"m starting to see some bing search traffic in my logs. They've been missing in action there for quite a while.

I don't think it will happen, but who knows maybe bing has a trick up their sleeve. I'm just having a hard time seeing this happening. Although I would love for it to happen, I find bing more appealing... That would be a day for celebration if it did!!

I think we all can relate to what's happening here. Bing is essentially moving into the top 100 in SERPS, but as we all know getting to page 1 and then #1 becomes increasingly difficult, to use an analogy.

I think they are a ways off from passing Google. I do think we'll see a continued effort on their part to gain market share though.

Check Bing's API rules. You can use their API for anything, except for SEO tools.

A search engine's goal is to deliver the most relevant results to its users.

A SEO person's goal is to get their (or their client's) site to the top of the search engine results.

Those two goals are, for the most part, mutually exclusive.

  There are a couple of thoughts that come to mind when I am reading this thread.
  
  One of the things was user experience. I did the same search on all 3 engines to see what the results pages looked like. While ther are some subtle differences, like color of the premium ads but pretty much it is kind of hard to tell teh difference in how the results are displayed.
  
  Strangely enough, for me, I tended to prefer the Bing results page because I viewed it as less cluttered. But the truth is all 3 look very, very similar. So much so thta you could swap the logos around and I think many folks would find it difficult to tell the difference.
  
  That's not really how the search engines work inside, but in order to achive the results and ROI the companies are looking for, the results do have to be displayed in a way that leads folks to click on the ads instead of the organic results.
  
  All 3 are in essence, big ad serving platforms. The talk is often about user experience and curating the web, but none of those companies are going to spend a huge chunk of their money on that kind of philanthropy. Especially if doing so does not lead to a profit or at least huge brand recognition.
  
  Google has IMO the best eye focus for the premium ads. The word Everything is bolded and in English anyway is longer than the rest of the words in the left hand sidebar. This makes it appear to be a directional signal to the premium ads with the background color. I would suspect that this helps bring the ad ROI and CTR up.
  
  I know my wife will click on the premium ads thinking they are organic results. I am willing to bet that many people do. If it was really about creating a great user experience, there would be no ads. But its not about that. Its about providing a value added service and making a profit from doing so. No problem there.
  
  But now that from my viewpoint, there is very little difference in the apperance of the results displayed, I think the competition for market share will rest for a large part on brand recognition and not ancillary services added.
  
  That's only my opinion. Microsoft has bought a lot of things to increase their market share over the years. While that tactic does not result in increase in market share from consumer choice, it has worked well for them in the past.

"Google" is now a verb - i.e. - "Let me google that." Bing is not. Haven't heard anyone say they were going to "bing" something.

No way Bing overtakes Google in 2012, unless something amazingly drastic happens. Don't forget that Google's market share in search will continue to climb in mobile as well, as Android phone continue to crush it in the smartphone market.

It may not be Bing that overtakes Google but a shift in mindset and approach to search. The biggest threat to Google right now is not Bing but Facebook. If Facebook continues revising and refining their means of monetizing the site, advertisers will spend with them. Basically the social side of things has the potential to overtake Google because rather than blunt ads it may eventually be recommended products from family/friends/trusted acquaintances. Who really knows?

Of interest perhaps to some of you is that the young Larry Page and Sergey Brin tried to sell Google to Alta Vista and then Yahoo for a million dollars and got turned down by Paul Flaherty and David Filo respectively! Ouch!
