Hi Guys,

I am quite newbie to VPS thingy. I am paying $10 a month for my normal shared hosting at hostgator. Because I need to use scrapebox and SENUKEX, I need an VPS as well now. Just looked at quite a cheap VPS hosting plan at mochahost.com/2844-0-3-61.html. Here are some of my questions before buying a VPS.

1. Has anyone used this company, mochahost? Any positive or negative feedback please? How does we know if the company is using quality servers or not. How to check that. as we can't see that physically.

2. As I need to use it for hosting my sites as well as using for scrapebox and SENukeX, shall I go for Linux or Windows VPS?

3. Would 1GB RAM enough for this kind of usage?

4. How would VPS performance be affected if I add probably 30 more websites to my VPS hosting account in coming few weeks, keeping in mind that I need to use both the above softwares on daily basis?

5. What are the benefits of VPS over shared hosing if I need to host around 50 small websites, if I don't use it to run the softwares like scrapebox or SENukeX?

Thanks,

dbadwal

I am hosting on vps level 3 on hostgator and i think this is the best solution. Regarding that company i have not used it ever.
Other recommendations: liquidhost - i heard many good things about them.

You can find several reviews on almost any host there. I haven't tried your particular host. Knownhost and HostGator and actually both superb.

    2) Definitely Linux for what you're doing.

    3) Yes.. keep in mind that with VPS hosting, about 250/300MB is going to instantly go to your OS so you lose that right away, but I still think a 1GB plan is plenty for what you're doing.

    4) The thing with 30 more websites, is that it really won't be any more intensive than 1 because each site will scrape at different times, correct? But.. how processor intensive will your 1 site be while scraping? With VPS, you'll be sharing the processor with others, so going from shared hosting to VPS may not really help you for this. Scraping doesn't typically use much memory.. it's the processor that will kill you. You might have to look to a dedicated server. Once again, I'd recommend HostGator.. cheaper, "Managed" (very important for your first) and control panel included.

    5) None really. I'd personally stay with shared just for the price if it's just to run 50 small sites. HostGator has unlimited disk space, unlimited mysql dbs and you name it. For $8 a month, you can't beat it. Why pay more?

    Hope this helps! Thanks,

    Hi Amy,

Thanks for the detailed reply. Much appreciated. As you mentioned, I think I would go with Hostgator's VPS. Dedicated one is bit expensive for my montly budget.

As you mentioned that scraping won't take much memory, its the processor which needs to be powerful. Does that mean that I can go with the memory somewhere in between 700-1000 MB?

    Kind Regards,

1.I don't have experience with the company you said but i am sure there are many good VPS server providers that you can know more about them by asking from their customers.
2.I am not sure but i think it needs Linux server as most scripts.
3.I think 1GB RAM is good enough for a low-medium traffic website if the CMS is optimized well.
4.Adding 30 sites to this VPS is not good and reduces the speed of your server a lot.
5.VPS is better because it gives you more hardware resources than shared ones.

Yes i would also recommend you to go for vps hosting because it is much better then dedicated server
This completly wrong . On a dedicated servers you don't have any virtualization layers which can badly handled according to the providers.

However in the OP scenario, i would advice to split the tasks.

You may want to get a Linux and a Windows VPS, especially if you intend to run SEO tools. At first you'll use just the tools you mentionned but this is meant to grow and it will have an impact on the ressources for the 30 websites.
Plus on a 1gb Windows VPS it would be quickly saturated.

Basically i would plan a budget of around $50 to get a CPanel VPS and a windows VPS.

Pay attention, to the plan above as it is stating that they allocate 2 cores for 1 Gb of RAM and they are more likely using Hyper-V.
As the CPU is shared on Hyper-V their plans isn't porperly balanced. On a VPS node you can put between 16 and 20 customers generally. So if the 16 got 2 cores you can quickly deduce that you wouldn't get the availability advertised :p

On the opposite if you isolate at 1 core, it insure a better quality and less overselling.

If you need good places to get your web hosting services, just name i'd quote my secret adress for quality & low cost :p

If you need VPS for SEO tools like SEnuke, xrumer or other top softwares then you will have to go with Windows VPS. You can checkout my signature or PM me for more details.

Here is the answer to your question :

    1) You can checkout my signature for more details on this point.
    2) You would need Windows VPS if you wanna use Any kind of SEO tools.
    3) RAM would really depend on what kind of threading you are going to have and how many softwares are you planning to run all together. More threading and softwares would mean more RAM. So in your case 1 GB would be a bit low if you are maxing out all the options

Firstly, keep your hosting for websites separated from SEO tools host because chances are when you will use your SEO tools without proxies, you might get your IP banned by various sites.

If you have more questions, feel free to PM me.

    Be careful when choosing VPS.

Some of them are OpenVZ based and some of them are XEN based.

You want the XEN based one, even if it costs few bucks a month extra.

The OpenVZ are very frequently oversold and may not perform much better than what you see on your shared hosting.

If the provider doesn't tell you what virtualization platform is being used, it's safe to assume it's OpenVZ.

Don't go for the cheapest one. Do you homework, ask about outages and backups.

Xen could be oversold too, no issue going with openvz.

    you need windows hosting

you should have 2 gb ram or more if you want performance I do not recommend 1gb ram to run
scrapebox , senukex and websites together

do not pay for a whole year, try a monthly package and you ll test the water

Cost should not be the only factor for your hosting partner

Try to see uptime of your host, search for good and bad review if bad reviews are too many, look for another
