for one site, medium to large competition.

i have had good results before doing a couple link trade requests a day, they add up pretty quickly. but that was a-b-c trades between my network of blogs.

but using blog comments, forum profiles, bookmarking, wonder what kind of numbers you daily link builders hit?

I've been wondering this same question. I have one site that i just loaded up with 600 links (manually) with in 3 weeks, and its getting me sales and is ranked in the top page for my 2 secondary keywords. I keep reading not to build links too fast. And then I see other people saying that this is b.s.
So I've come to the conclusion that I'm gonna make a few burner sites and use AMR and maybe buy some backlink packages, then I'm gonna make some sites that revolve around a niche about which I'm passionate and link kinda slowly. This is strictly experimentation for me, as I am a rookie. I want to get to the bottom of this so I can avoid that ambiguity on this topic. Thanks a lot for this thread man, I hope it picks up

For the new sites,Always Build links slowly,Don't do any blast of links.Creating some 100 links per week is enough after your site reaches three months do other works.
Article writing will help as well. But update your site regularly.

100 links a week for the first 3 months? Within a couple of weeks of setting up a new site I'll probably go for about 10 - 15,000 links and I've never had any problems apart from the usual 'dance' around which happens with most new sites. There is no such thing as overlinking or any guideline anywhere on the net that says there is some sort of magic number of links. Just build as many links as you can.

So all anyone has to do is blast a load of links at their competitors sites and they can get them sandboxed for a month? Let's not be silly.

Yes, but its kind of like trying to attack your enemy by having a vampire kill him. Yes, he will die today and be out of your hair for awhile...but after some time...he is going to comeback stronger, flying around and kicking the **** out of you twice as hard

So yeah, you can blast your competitors and yeah, they will disappear...for awhile...but then they will come back stronger. Most of us don't want to/can't handle disappearing for months at a time and would rather slowly move up and always be nice and cozy on the radar

              Edit:
(LMAO - a guy in my office thought my analogy was awesome and made this real quick)

There is no concrete number that anyone can make as a line for you to not cross...only guidelines you can follow based on the type of page you have, its rank, age etc.

For new or a weak website go for 50/day per page you want to optimize. Stronger domains can take hundreds and of course 2.0s can take even more "damage".

You should test for yourself on a throw away domain so you can see what works for you. Good luck brother!

You can make any number of links, thats not a problem, you have to decide numbers according to the competition of your Niche! But I will advise never make 1000s of links at a blast, may get you sandboxed!

100 links per day is also fine but then there should be a relative constant rate at which you make links!

    Regards,
    Shiva

But in all honesty, it depends more on what type and quality of links you are building. If you are building profiles then you would need to build up to 5 times as much, as if you were building blog comment links. I would suggest keeping a diverse schedule of links each week, and managing the quantity of each type separately.

If you are building links manually and not using any software to build spamming i dont think there is any limit

    hope this helps...

Quantity in building links is good but we must consider first quality backlinks.
